26. The Diary by Eileen Goudge. I knew I'd have quite a bit on my plate between work and Good Friday activities so I picked a book that was short and sweet. I'll also add poignant to the list of adjectives ( Read more... )

I just finished #23 and 24 (see new post)

Edited to add: I have only read one book in that genre (the last one, re K2). The book was *Into Thin Air*, by Jon Krakouer (sp?)

I read it for the only book club I was ever in and though I did finish it, I did not enjoy it at all. He writes well, but I will never understand the mentality that craves such risk and danger, just for the sake of it. That is something that is so foreign to my own sensibilities. It makes me extremely uncomfortable to read it and on some level, angry, too. Such a awaste of life, for what.

Which is not to say I only read what makes me comfortable but having read that one, I doubt I'd read another such book.

like what lives do these people lead that they can just up and leave for months at a time to lay in sleeping bags and become acclimated to high altitude?

I liked Into Thin Air and read it on the heels of seeing "Everest" in Omni-Max so that had a lot to do with it I think. I liked Krakauer's style of writing as well - very clean and brisk. Read another one by him "Under the Banner of Heaven" about Mormonism and that was pretty fascinating as well.

I think I'm drawn to stories about people who are completely and utterly different from me but what does that say about MY sensibilities? I wonder *giggle
