Just finished Dark Tower 4. I'm a bit worried that it seems to have the least to do with the actual Dark Tower of all the books so far and it's the one I enjoyed the most. Roland's backstory was just a good story. It didn't get caught up in the seemingly gimmicky crap the rest of the series has had. And yet, I have to finish reading.

If you don't like gimmicky, I don't know how you'll feel about Wolves of the Calla. But for me the last three books in the series really ramp up the feeling of "everything is connected to everything else," which I feel is the central theme of the series.

Sort of ditto with Paul. The series is still good, but it's about to become a lot more... masturbatory.

Hmmm...I'll give the next book a shot and go from there. I got 3 and 4 as presents and got 1 and 2 from half price books, so I'm out all of $10 so far.

Some of this may be a symptom of overhype. Lots of people said this series was incredible and to me it's been more The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Fanfiction with extra cheese and LOTR thrown in.

And then when I'm about to give up on the whole thing I get to the backstory bits that I thought were really solid.

is it worth it? I might pick it up if it is.

At this point I don't know.

If you can get it cheap I'd almost suggest just reading the first one. Then, depending on how enthusiastic you are about that, either a) give up, b) read it all, or c) read the last 3/4ths of the 4th book to get Roland's backstory :)

Or just let me know and I'll send em to you once Kendra is done/decides not to read em.

At least read through The Drawing of the Three, the second of seven. If you're not interested by then, odds are it's not worth it to you.

Random drop-by.

Dark Tower series = love.

Of course, I started reading it when I was eight, so I'm a bit biased...

OK, I'll leave now.
