I finished A Confederacy of Dunces and I'm about halfway through Kung Fu High School. I spent all of CoD wishing someone would come out of fucking nowhere and kung fu the shit out of the main character. It's a bit disconcerting to be suddenly wishing for the opposite during the new book.

The only time I laughed out loud was at the penis joke relating to his hot dog cart.

Dude, me too.

At least that's something it has going for it. I mean, if you can't pull off a dick joke, it's time to give up on writing humor.

This was one of my favorite books in high school, but re-reading it last year I didn't find it quite as impressive. Apparently the author was uncannily similar to his main character, which to me kinda casts a poignant shadow over everything. My favorite parts were always the excerpts from Ignatius's ongoing book, with the pompous epigrams and the mock-heroic language.

I got the impression that Ignatius was supposed to be some wonderous anti-hero that I was supposed to be rooting for, but he completely failed to win me over. I agree that his writings were some of the best parts.

Maybe my chosen profession is just too full of neckbeards with similar misguided senses of their own importance.
