I just got back from my 2nd autocross of the weekend. The BMWCCA had one yesterday out at Texas Motor Speedway (just the bus lot, not the track), and the Porsche club had one today. It was such a nice day and we got done early enough yesterday that I wasn't too fried for today. Long story short I got faster with every run and I know there's still ( Read more... )

Counting these 2 I've been to 4. I did one a month or so ago and then before that it was probably 6 months back.

It seemed like a waste to have a car like mine and not drive the shit out of it.

If I had a car like yours I think I'd be too scared to drive it. I would hire armed guards to stand around it twenty-four hours a day.

That's really cool. When I visited my brother in New Mexico, we went to an autocross. The one you went to sounds more organized and professional, though. Nonetheless it was exciting. I didn't dare try to bust out my car in that parking lot, though, and for fears that later proved well-founded. There was dust on the pavement, it was a very tight track, and there were parking lot islands (those little curb things that usually have a tree and some grass and separate sections of the parking lot). Well, the final turn before the finish line was a hard left between two curbs. Naturally, I was scared of something like that. As it turned out, 3 different cars wrecked right there as we watched. One spun out and slammed into the curb, destroying the alignment (front wheels facing both left AND right = not good). Another just damaged his wheel and bumper. The third actually lost control and as he over-corrected, he actually jumped the entire island, blowing out both left tires and sending sparks everywhere. The car wouldn't start after that ( ... )

Find your local BMWCCA and go drive with them. They're always well done with very safe course designs. They also have sensible classes for non-BMWs (of which a lot show up, so you won't be the only one), in case you want to try to be competitive. The Porsche guys had 8 different classes for Porsche, but then they lumped everyone else into "Other - German", "Other - Japanese", etc., so there wasn't any balance.
