Fallout from reading Omnivore

I'm on the fourth and final section of Pollan's 'Omnivore's Dilemma,' where he attempts to assemble his own meal by hunting, gathering and gardening.  I don't think I'm going to get on the bandwagon of eating only those things which come from within 100 miles of where I live - I love my coffee and I indulge in some fresh out-of-season ( Read more... )

wow - thanks for the info

We try to eat "in season" and I try to check country of origin. I'm really concerned that I can't get "natural" meat. We have only three chains of supermarkets. They have very limited offerings. There are no specialty stores here.

I grew up eating our own produce. My mother had a huge garden and in winter we ate what she canned or froze. It was a lot of work but it was the way life was in the country.

My concern for my food is a child of both my path towards Green Witchery and the necessity that I get a handle on my health. My knees, among other joints, have gotten too arthritic for my weight so I have a very good reason to get right with my diet. The Green Witch studies will stay out in public entries; the weight-loss plan has, so far, been in Friends posts between me and a couple of in-person friends who are also on LJ.
Sometimes I eat vegetarian simply to lower my personal impact on the earth, other times I'm just having a day where I can't bear to eat a critter. There are a couple of vendors at the big Farmer's Market here that have meats but it's whole fish, fowl and rabbits only. The big natural food market that was in my town closed about five years ago so I don't know where we would get sustainably-raised meat, here, either.
My garden isn't huge but it is always a good year for something. We also have several kinds of berries going. Gardens are a wonderful thing.

I'd love to be vegetarian for ethical reasons. I did cook veggy style for awhile back in the 70's or 80's but the family wasn't convinced. My husband now does most of the cooking so vegetarian is out. But we do eat as naturally as possible with lots of fruit & veggies. Personally I limit my amount of meat. I try to use the "no more than a tape cassette" rule. I put on too much weight awhile back. It's too late to get it off but I'm trying to guard against it having "additional friends".

The "additional friends" made me laugh - yes, I know all about those, LOL. I'll be eating my salad and having pineapple for dessert but I still know that I would rather go get Doug's Fish Fry and have lots of chocolate for dessert, hehehe.
Haven't had a real french fry in months...[sigh]
