The "Darkness" spell does not actually cause Darkness. As the excerpt below states, it creates a state of shadowy illumination (i.e., the same as starlight). Back in 2nd edition, Darkness was darkness, but with 3.5, they nerfed the spell (quite justifiably, I would say.)

"This spell causes an object to radiate shadowy illumination out to a 20-foot radius. All creatures in the area gain concealment (20% miss chance). Even creatures that can normally see in such conditions (such as with darkvision or low-light vision) have the miss chance in an area shrouded in magical darkness."

Since low-light vision is mentioned as an ability "that can normally see in such conditions", the spell is clearly not talking about pitch blackness.

It's all moot now, but we were shocked to discover that we'd been playing such a basic spell worng for so long.

Damn, yeah, I didn't check the spell description....oops....
I guess when they set out to fix the Cleric's Darkness/Blindsight spell combo exploit, they nerfed both parts....geez
And yeah, I had no idea about it. I wouldn't base half my character around a mechanic that I knew was being played incorrectly....How the hell did we miss that??? I know I had to have read that spell at some point, didn't I????
