https://www.polygon.com/22600437/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-ya-book-release-in-every-generation-cover-reveal I didn't think Fox owned BtVS. But apparently I was wrong. I'm sure there's plenty of Tumblr discussion I've missed and need to go over and catch up on, but for now, I have feelings.
Frankie Rosenberg is passionate about the environment, a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School, and the daughter of the most powerful witch in Sunnydale history. Her mom, Willow, is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie’s happily quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of an attack, and all the Slayers-including Buffy, Faith, and Hailey’s older sister Vi-might be dead. That means it’s time for this generation’s Slayer to be born. But being the first ever Slayer-Witch means learning how to wield a stake while trying to control her budding powers. With the help of Hailey, a werewolf named Jake, and a hot but nerdy sage demon, Frankie must become the Slayer, prevent the Hellmouth from opening again, and find out what happened to her Aunt Buffy, before she’s next. Get ready for a whole new story within the world of Buffy!
(Please note, I never read the comics.)
I have feelings. They...are mixed. On the one hand, okay, this was a girl power series of the 90s. On the other hand, not everything needs to be franchised, thanks, Disney.
Also while there were some issues with BtVS and they were noticeable early on if you were a big fan of a character that got fridged to give someone some manpain (*cough* Jenny Calendar *cough*) taking the fannish blinders off your eyes, also, yeah, it was formative, and yes, damn, you guys, Drusilla is my problematic psychic murder baby, okay? Do I want Disney's hands on her? Softening her or killing her off or removing her absolutely hideously mixed up issues? Nope, I absolutely do not.
Do I notice that
the easiest way to get rid of the problematic elements of the "elder generation" was to kill the majority of them off, including Faith, SUPER problem child Slayer whom I adore for being hella complex, also yes, she was totally in love with Buffy, and also dead. Also kind of a problem child Slayer for doing problem things. I'm amazed they let Willow survive (I mean, everything she's done in the past, yikes), but I guess now that Willow's a mom she's going to have all her sharp edges filed off and be okay? Also is Willow still gay?
Because this is Disney. So. You know?
I'm so iffy. Me and my library might make a date on this one, but I mean. Not everything needs to be franchised.
