Hey Hawk, A conversation elsewhere on the topic of cats left me with a strong urge to re-read some early IAR (the lovely and eminently satisfying Chapter 7), and *this* came as a happy surprise. Awesome vignette: perfect as a self-contained one-off story, equally perfect -- should time and inspiration take you there -- as a preface to more.

I've been thinking, recently, about taking chances. It seems part of being 'grown up' may be the understanding that relationships bloom only where the people involved continually take chances in trusting bits of their selves to each other. It's a risky proposition -- though infinitely rewarding when it works. From that perspective, interesting to see how your Alex and Olivia handle their first leaps of trust: Alex needing the plausible deniability granted by intoxication but willing to speak her piece, while Olivia prefers clarity and the sober light of morning but protects herself with the distance of leaving a note. The balance suits their characters.

Why thank you--I actually had to go back and read IAR Chapter 7 to find out what you were talking about. I do reread them occasionally to maintain whatever semblance of continuity exists in IAR but I don't remember them as chapters anymore--rather more like "oh yeah, that blob of writing I did back when Jimmy Carter was in office
