Extended History + Headcanon [personality]
Kaito isn't the kind to beat around the bush. He's to the point and blunt, sometimes to the point where he seems insensitive. It doesn't matter if what he has to say hurts the other party. He lacks a certain empathy towards other people, which helps him as a hunter because it allows him to remain focused on whatever task is at hand. He's often single-minded in the pursuit of his investigations or missions, sometimes even flirting with the line of being seen as reckless and unethical. It doesn't really bother him if others perceive him that way; appearances mean nothing to him. It's the content of a person that concerns him, and Kaito has a very firm stance on who he is.
He's cool-headed, aloof in demeanor, yet he doesn't put on airs. That's just the type of person he grew into. He isn't someone who is easily shaken. His confidence is there for anyone to see, but there's a certain distance in his mannerisms that makes it hard to gauge him. And that's exactly how he likes it. He prefers not having anyone know what he truly thinks or feels about any given situation, he feels it gives him an edge and a better vantage point over his subjects/targets. Most people would find it to be a lonely existence, but Kaito simply considers it a preference that not everyone shares. He has no trouble in working with others if he has to, yet his aloofness suggests that he rarely mixes his professional life with his personal one.
[1] He's definitely not that kind of guy who will stay to gossip by the water cooler when there's work to be done.
Trust is a privilege that has to be earned, at least in relation to Kaito. And it's not something easily done. Kaito is of the philosophy that the only person anyone can trust is themselves.
[2] He doesn't automatically suspect everyone he meets will betray him one day. That would just be paranoid, and Kaito's paranoia isn't that severe. He's much too self-reliant and independent to rely on someone else. It would be a blow to his pride if he had to ask for help, even though he would ask if there was no other alternative between that and death. He's somewhat cautious of new people and tries to figure them out the moment he meets them. He won't go out simply to "make friends," but to establish a network of information that he can tap into when needed.
[3] There are a rare few whom Kaito actually cares about and respects, such as Zero and Yagari, but that's only because of how long he's known them.
Kaito's a cynical, jaded individual. He hates vampires, especially purebloods, as they can create vampires on a whim if they so desired, a hatred deeply embedded in his soul and reinforced by the memory of his old brother. He has his issues regarding what happened that night, but it's been several years since then and Kaito has coped by trying to forget.
[4] He half succeeded in keeping the event repressed in his own psyche, a kind of half forgotten nightmare. It's not something he wishes to think about, let alone try to talk out. Even if the subject's brought up, Kaito won't visibly react to it and will let it slide without any meaningful comment. It's definitely an incident, though, that drives him to keep on with the hunt.
[5] He's fundamentally a good person. He knows the difference between right and wrong. Yet, even so, Kaito doesn't mind pushing the boundaries of what others might consider morally right. He brought Sayori Wakaba to the vampire soiree, despite knowing the dangers her presence would present, yet he did so for a reason he deemed important enough to risk her safety. That said, Kaito may push the boundaries of ethical practices at times but he doesn't overstep that clear divide between being a hunter and being monstrous.
Headcanon
[1] He seems compartmentalized.
[2] Just a head-canon hunch.
[3] There's actually little to suggest in canon that Kaito has a "life" outside work. I always thought he was the type of guy who devoted his energy to his job.
[4] More headcanon. He's kind of "too together" sometimes.
[5] Unless he's deeply disturbed or mentally unhinged (and since there's no indication of either), I think it's a good reason to stay with a job.
[orientation] There's no evidence in canon that links him romantically (implied or otherwise) to other characters, so his sexual orientation is unknown.
[appearance] N/A
[wish] To be able to live without guilt.
[requested house] Hibiscus District, Mokuhi House
[misc notes] Nothing noteworthy.
