And Kaito is more or less booted out of the city that he lived in for nearly a year. But instead of going home like he expected, he wakes up in a morgue instead.
Zero Kiryuu ✔ His brother in arms. Not much changed in their relationship. There was one event that put a strain on their partnership - a curse that changed how they felt about each other, which resulted in seriously awkward situations never to be spoken of again for as long as they both live. They avoided each other for a while, agreed to meet for ramen, and ended that strange and embarrassing chapter in their lives. Things got back to normal. On a personal level, Kaito neither liked or openly acknowledged Zero's relationship with Yuuki. And while he might have hinted his disapproval, he never tried to get between them - Zero was a grown man, after all, and capable of making his own mistakes. Plus Kaito wasn't interested in getting in the middle of that potential mess. Except, maybe, to tell him "I told you so" if Kaname Kuran (Yuuki's fiance) ever showed up. But Zero left Ukiyo eventually, and Kaito tried not to let it bother him (though it very obviously did).
Yagari Touga ✔ His former kind of mentor. Out of everyone Kaito interacted with, Yagari was the one he respected and trusted most. He was not only his superior, but Yagari trained him briefly as a teenager. Yagari treated Kaito like a kid, which annoyed him to no end (probably why Yagari did it), and Kaito enjoyed getting back at Yagari whenever he could. He was always yelling when he was concerned about his former students, especially at Kaito for some reason. Yagari disappeared from Ukiyo several months prior. It was a blow when he vanished, but like in most situations that could affect him emotionally, Kaito bottled it up and kept it to himself.
Ichiru Kiryuu ✖ Zero's twin brother. They didn't get along when Ichiru was alive, they didn't get along after he was dead. He disappeared along with Zero. The thought bothered Kaito for a long time, since Ichiru returning to their own world meant that he would go back to being dead. Despite how much they didn't along, it wasn't what Kaito wanted for Ichiru either.
Yuuki Kuran ✖ He didn't like her. She was already a pureblood, which already put her on his shitlist, but Kaito didn't consider her an immediate threat. He kept his distance from her, acknowledging her relationship with Zero without ever acknowledging it. However, instead of outright hatred, Kaito had enough sense to treat her with a cold civility that he especially created for vampires with political ties in his world. (He wasn't about to start an incident.) She was always unnecessarily nice and kind on occassion, which was more than he deserved considering how he viewed and treated her, but they never grew closer or farther apart aside from the careful distance Kaito maintained. She had no part in his daily life and neither did he. It was agreeable. She gave him a strange handmade doll that was akin to an octopus and a rabbit when he was event!blind once. It was the only momento he had of her after she left with Zero and Ichiru. It's probably still sitting at his house in Ukiyo.
Sasuke Uchiha ✔ A friend? They initially used each for other to survive and founded their interactions on the fact. It was businesslike, with little interest in either party to get to know the other. Neither of them had any intention of crossing any set boundaries. However, despite their attempts to remain detached, their unique situation - forged by curses and events and personal matters - found them coming to unspoken terms with each other over the course of a year. They could no longer just see each other as strangers with only a business arrangement between them, though they never tried to explain or define their relationship with words. Their personalities clashed and matched all at once, sometimes antagonistic, yet there was acceptance there as well - and loyalty, at least on Kaito's part.
history:
Wikified - though not incredibly detailed, it does tell you his background in a very concise amount of words.
personality:
Kaito isn't the kind to beat around the bush. He's blunt and to the point, sometimes to the point where he seems insensitive. He's often single-minded in the pursuit of his investigations or missions, which helps him as a hunter because it allows him to remain focused on whatever task is at hand, sometimes even flirting with the line of being seen as reckless and unethical. It doesn't really bother him if others perceive him that way; appearances mean nothing to him. It's the content of a person that concerns him, and Kaito has a very firm stance on who he is.
He's aloof in demeanor, yet he doesn't put on airs. That's just the type of person he grew into. He isn't someone who is easily shaken. His confidence is there for anyone to see, but there's a certain distance in his mannerisms that makes it hard to gauge him. And that's exactly how he likes it. He prefers not having anyone know what he truly thinks or feels about any given situation, he feels it gives him an edge and a better vantage point over his subjects/targets. Most people would find it to be a lonely existence, but Kaito simply considers it a preference that not everyone shares. He has no trouble in working with others if he has to, yet his aloofness suggests that he rarely mixes his professional life with his personal one.
Trust is a privilege that has to be earned, at least in relation to Kaito. And it's not something easily done. Kaito is of the philosophy that the only person anyone can trust is themselves. He doesn't automatically suspect everyone he meets will betray him one day. That would just be paranoid. He's much too self-reliant and independent to rely entirely on someone else. He's somewhat cautious but indifferent of new people and tries to figure them out the moment he meets them. There are a few whom Kaito genuinely cares about and respects, such as Zero and Yagari, but that's only because of how long he's known them and because of the things they've experienced together.
Kaito's a cynical individual but not entirely jaded. He hates vampires, especially purebloods, as they can create vampires on a whim if they so desire, a hatred deeply embedded in his being and reinforced by the memory of his older brother. It's not something he wishes to think about, let alone try to talk out. Even if the subject's brought up, Kaito won't visibly react to it and will let it slide without any meaningful comment. It's definitely an incident, though, that stays with him.
He's cool-headed in nearly any situation, with practical views and practical methods, though their execution may sometimes be a little questionable. He's insensitive when he needs to be, especially when he's gauging people or seeking information. He's also a good, loyal friend, but his circle of friends is a small one, and when he's concerned about a friend he doesn't hesitate to voice it. He's steady, sure-footed, and has a set of personal and professional values that he firmly believes in.
He's fundamentally a good person. He knows the difference between right and wrong. Yet, even so, Kaito doesn't mind pushing the boundaries of what others might consider morally right. He brought Sayori Wakaba to the vampire soiree, despite knowing the dangers her presence would present, yet he did so for a reason he deemed important enough to risk her safety (but also with the insurance that he himself would protect her from any true danger). That said, Kaito may push the boundaries of ethical practices at times but he doesn't overstep that clear divide between being a hunter and being something monstrous.
abilities/powers: Canon hasn't really provided any notable skills or abilities that Kaito might possess, beyond what is known about hunters. He's trained since he was a child to become a hunter. And, as far as the canon goes, Kaito built a reputation for himself as being a very capable and outstanding one. In the light novel, Kaito used a handgun - so I usually go with the assumption that Kaito is good at using various types of firearms.
He has the ability to sense vampires, varying on distance. He heals faster and is also physically stronger than the average human (but not like how it is for vampires obviously).
He received basic hand-to-hand combat training as an apprentice, and this has been further refined by training with Sasuke Uchiha.

Well, at least it works.
[The words are muttered, but the voice is calm.
For someone leaning against a necropsy table, with only a paper-thin gown wrapped around his hips, Kaito looks remarkably unperturbed - a faint interest flickering in his eyes at the device in his hand. It's disappears within seconds, though, and his expression cools considerably.]
This is really one hell of way to wake up.
Let me guess, this device broadcasts to multiple devices similar to this one. What a pain.
[He doesn't look very impressed, but he doesn't seem all that pissed off either.]
I need clothes and I need information. I want to know where I am, why I'm here, and what's the catch. From my experience, these situations don't point to happy ends.
