Speaking of homeroast coffee, have you checked out the website for MuseCon in the Chicago area at the beginning of August? Their GoH this year is a coffee-roasting guru who bills herself as "Joan of Dark".
There's a lot of other techie/craftsy things that go on at MuseCon also. I'm teaching quilting, for one. And there is a stained-glass workshop that, if it does not wind up scheduled opposite my quilting class sessions, I may get tempted to look in on.
Love my Hario hand cranked grinder. You do need to hack it a bit (wrap electrical tape around the shaft) to tighten it for really optimal grinding for espresso, but once you do, it performs like a high quality commercial grinder in terms of consistency. We tested it side by side with a Mahlkoenig, with very good results.
