Today was one of those "plow through some specific tasks" days ... one task being recover photos off an unreadable SD card, and the other being "get Skype installed on some secondary or throwaway machine for next week's interviews

What distro to use? I've been using Ubuntu since 2007, and it's available in both desktop/laptop and server editions. Linux Mint is also good. Zorin OS has a user interface that's very close to the Windows UI. Also consider CentOS, OpenSUSE or Mageia, even though I don't think any of these are Debian-based.
