What distro to use? I've been using Ubuntu since 2007, and it's available in both desktop/laptop and server editions. Linux Mint is also good. Zorin OS has a user interface that's very close to the Windows UI. Also consider CentOS, OpenSUSE or Mageia, even though I don't think any of these are Debian-based.
