Hardware play-around time

Gotta break out of this professional rut somehow ... Learning Python is on the focus-list for the interval between now and getting the next contract. Plus other stuff. Like more practice in "agnostic" scripting, things that will run on several different flavors of *nix without requiring modification. And working on getting some hands-on with ( Read more... )

You'll get more out of the wimpier boxes by running *nix on bare metal instead of in a VM.

Consider signing up for AWS -- they give you a year's worth of free service (at a rather low level, but good enough for playing with different distributions). They also have an RDB (Redshift) and No-SQL DB (Dynamo).

Hmm, I hadn't thought of AWS, but that would be good experience, too. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'd like to keep an XP box around; that, plus needing more VM experience, is why I was figuring on ESXi with XP running as a guest when needed. Skype-on-XP-guest was one of the workarounds, since I don't feel comfortable with Skype security/privacy-wise as a permanent resident on a regular box.

It's sort of amusing to think of an 8g box as "wimpier" nowadays. Wow our standards change over time :)

I sent you an email the other day including a photo of some Python texts that Morris had acquired in the last year or so. And I think there may be one more that wound up in a different box. If these look useful to you, let me know and we can figure out how to get them to you if you need them earlier than GaFilk.
