Sigh

I stayed up till 2 this morning reading "Raising Steam." It was...a good story. But so bittersweet. Embers, no sparks. But I'll bever say good-bye to the Disc and all its marvelous inhabitants, not when there are so many wonderful books to read over and over again.

I haven't read it yet, but it's on my list. Is it bittersweet because his Alzheimer's is affecting his writing, or is it because it ends the Discworld story somehow? Two of my favorite Discworld stories are The Truth and Unseen Academicals, so I don't need laugh-out-loud writing from Terry, just a solid story.

Well, it is a good story, chock full of those wonderful ideas and details we love in Terry's books. But at times it seems more like an outline rather than a fully developed plot. Some reviewers remark that using dictation and the voice-recognition software seem to be working well, but I feel it may be taking a bit away from his usual style. And that may be that he's losing the ability to self-edit or really express what's in his mind.

I don't know. You may have a diffeernt reaction. But it definitely feels like a wrap-up of the basic Discworld story.
