So, I did the setting thing. I'm a bit uncomfortable with it, though. I'm not comfortable doing things to settings that I really don't understand. What if I just gave someone access to everything on accident? Not that my LJ is super secret or anything.

I guess it depends on how much you trust the LJ staff. The opt-out instructions follow what they say to do in their not-exactly-easy-to-find post about their data mining. Alternately, you might be able to read up on the admin console and find out exactly what a given command does. Myself, I'm satisfied with following the staff's instructions. If they really wanted to be underhanded about it, they'd just mine the data without telling anyone about it at all, and there's not much I'd be able to do about it.
