Amy and Rory Pond - and the epic Pond FamilysilverducksMay 20 2013, 21:30:32 UTC
So, I thought I would start this discussion off with the glorious Ponds - Amy and Rory! And because the Pond family is so awesome and also includes River and the Doctor, I thought we could discuss the overall Pond family here too

This is kind of a test comment, but I completely agree about the Ponds really beyond responsible for taking my Doctor Who fandom to the next (and completely bonkers) level. I mean, I even started to read the tie-in novels to get more Amy and Rory

Oh my goodness, YES there are tie-in novels. I am not sure whether Doctor Who Magazine is still featuring Amy and Rory in their comics, but in the US there is a standalone Doctor Who comic that has been using Amy and Rory as Eleven's companions. I'm woefully behind on the third series of the latter, but the first two had great characterization. I mean, the tie-in novels are basically glorified fanfiction, but some can be really good. My favorite is "The Glamour Chase," which gives some really good backstory to Rory. There are a few others which are good, but probably the most heartbreaking in retrospect is "Touched by an Angel," which, as you might guess, features the Weeping Angels

Yeah, I'm thinking that the John Hurt character has to be related to the Time War,* although it is interesting that Clara hasn't met him! I also thought that it was a SUPER clever tie-in to the finale title when Eleven emphasized that anything that mystery!Doctor did was not in the name of the Doctor

Yes, I really like Clara! And I am so, so happy that Eleven likes her too and isn't being a jerk to her like I think Ten was to Martha (which, tbh, soured me on Ten). I mean, I think that part of Clara's initial appeal to Eleven was to try to figure out the mystery, but I just get the sense that Eleven is genuinely fond of her, and that makes me happy. And she has just a realistic attitude (or, as realistic as you can get in Doctor Who): she is adventurous, but you can also tell when she is pushing herself to her limits. Like in Hide, when she needed the Doctor to dare her-that was both adorable and just so very Clara

Ok, so I apologise now for this thread, but man, I ship it so hard! I just really need to discuss it! LOL!
Anyway, I’ll be the first to admit I don’t usually like any love story at all for the Doctor. I just don’t think it works with his story arc or character. And why does he even need a love story? In fact, I kinda find the Doctor/Companion ships a bit creepy and icky, not to mention very unequal and unhealthy. I mean, he’s so much older and wiser and has seen so much of the universe! He can almost live forever! How could a companion ever feel equal to that
