Hey silverducks! Here's the Hunger Games post I was talking about setting up-I'll put up the Doctor Who post tomorrow after the fiftieth

Of course the first thread is going to be about Peeta: I really, really, really love that there was effort made to give him a personality that was not defined by Katniss. Although I was super irked by the line change in the beach scene that had him say that there was no one that he cared about out home: to me, it was inconsistent with the book and with D11. The poignancy of that scene, to me, is how he thinks that no one **needs** him at home (to be fair, Katniss is making similar calculations in thinking that her mother and Prim will be better off without her). But, oh man, did I love that he was snarky and brittle. And I did like that they kept him being critical of the Capitol at Snow's party, although it was too short for my taste.

YES! I ADORED Peeta in this film. They really did so, so much mroe with him than the first film. Here he was allowed to be his own person and character, with his own strengths and weakenesses

Thinking about it today, I think that one of the good things about the movies (even the first) is that it really provides good fodder to mull over what I think of the *books* and trying to unpack why I react to lines and scenes the way that I do! Like with the beach scene, I think that Peeta and Katniss BOTH get caught up in the moment and trying to convince each other not to die. Because I always read that scene in the context of the Peeta's first interview with Caesar in Mockingjay where he says that the arena becomes your whole world: I think that he is so entirely focused on making sure that Katniss lives that he doesn't want to give her ANY reason to doubt his sacrifice. Because I do think that it is a proper sacrifice, and I wish that the weight of his decision (and the subsequent loss of his family and how that upsets him in MJ) were more emphasized in the movie. Because it does lend a bit of "why should we care whether this guy lives when he himself thinks he has nothing?" Of course we should care just on principle, but

Yep, it definitely felt much more like book Peeta. And watching it again last night, I noticed even more occasions when he's all snarky and has "attitude!" IDK, maybe it's because I'm baised, but he felt much more rebellious than Gale

Still way too much non-canon Galeniss in my opinion, but man was their parting just as painful as I expected. I think that more time could have been spent in showing them developing a genuine friendship, but that became exponentially more difficult without the plant book scenes. Still, I'm glad that they kept in Katniss's rage in the hovercraft when she was informed that Peeta was captured by the Capitol, something that I really wish could have been kept in the first movie.
Oh my god... First of all, I've finally been converted to a Jennifer Lawrence fan. After that performance, I'm down with throwing all kinds of Oscars her way! Her final moments in the movie were heartbreaking. I loved the way she lunged at Haymitch and demanded to know what he was doing with them, and her reaction to Peeta's being taken by the Capitol was accurate. Nitpicky, but I do wish it had been a bit longer like it was in the book, and we could have seen her go days agonizing over Peeta because that really drove home the fact that she had fallen for him. And unfortunately, I DO think that's something the movie was sorely lacking on.
I was, honestly, pretty livid about the added Galeniss scenes when I saw it last night. The kiss goodbye made me the most angry. Especially since it took up time that could have been developed the Everlark relationship. But you saw my post on that.
Johanna was bloody amazing. Like, I couldn't with what a BAMF she was. LOVED her and her defiance against the Capitol! Haymitch was also wonderful this time

Yeah, I think that the movie came off as D12 = Galeniss and anything related to the Capitol = Everlark. Which, I think, could suggest to a non-bookreader that Gale is her "real" love. And, of course, that is **so** not the case in the books. I really did not like how the whipping kiss came off because the line "I'm going to stay here and cause all sorts of trouble" had exactly ZERO payoff. In the books, Katniss backtracks almost immediately, but that doesn't happen here, which lends a completely different tenor to the scene

Galeniss!silverducksNovember 23 2013, 18:24:37 UTC
So, ok, my main complaint with the film was the Galeniss in the middle, because it was totally overdone in my opinion. Not as bad as I'd feared, but still too much

Katniss' CharacterisationsilverducksNovember 24 2013, 00:09:37 UTC
Other than the Gale/Katniss stuff, I really was so happy with how they presented Katniss.
I was very worried we'd get a rebel Katniss, who is all for becoming the Mockingjay and leading the rebellion! It definitely felt that way from the ending of the first film and then all the early publicity.
But nope, we don't see that at all - we see book Katniss! We see right from the start that the berry trick wasn't about defiance, but about saving her and Peeta - so glad Snow clarified that!
And we see Katniss determined to try everything, even marriage, to try and save those she loved. Yes, she cares about the other Districts (that scene about Rue was just amazing!) and she wants to make them better, but not at the expense of those she loves. So we do see her trying to convince Snow.
And then later, she says she has no intention of being the Mockingjay or a symbol, she toes the line as much as she can.
So I really liked that we had book Katniss, rather than rebel Katniss and this gives me so much hope for the Mockingjay films.

Off-topic re the berries: did it seem to you that they used different footage for that scene than what actually appeared in the first movie? To me, it looked like both Katniss and Peeta got MUCH closer to eating the berries than what was shown in the first movie. I thought that that was interesting, but maybe it was wishful thinking

What to expect from Mockingjay?silverducksNovember 25 2013, 23:32:03 UTC
So, I'm pretty confident that Mockingjay will be brilliant. I really think Catching Fire showed how much effort the director and the rest of the team put into making not only a brilliant film, but one true to the books
