“To Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before”
"Space...The Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship, Enterprise. Its 5-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before!"
Those are the famous words that started the 6 series of the Star Trek Phenomena on September 8, 1966. These words introduced the name “Trekkie” to dictionaries, (the Webster’s Dictionary definition of “trekkie” is “an avid fan of Star Trek science fiction, television shows, and films; by extension, a person interested in space travel; also called Trekker”,) and revolutionized the word convention.
Gene Roddenberry’s space-age series continued on the tradition of stories like Jules Verne’s’ 2001: A Space Odyssey. The voices of William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Avery Brooks and most recently, Scott Bakula, have been heard by Star Trek fans for more than 30 years. Next year will be the 40th anniversary of one of the most successful shows in history. The movies have been one of the top-grossing franchises, matching those of Star Wars, Superman and Batman.
The project started in 1964, under the name of “Wagon Train to the stars ”. It was rejected by NBC, so Roddenberry re-casted and renamed the show. Luckily, he saved Spock, (Leonard Nimoy,) one of the favorite characters. The series revolved around Captain James T. Kirk, Science Officer Spock, Doctor McCoy and Engineering Officer Scotty. Enterprise A was their ship’s name. Their flights on TV ended in 1969, but lived on in movies until 1991. Star Trek: The Animated Series ran only a year from 1972-1973.
In 1986, Star Trek: The Next Generation started up with Captain Picard in the Captain’s chair. This was on the Starship Enterprise D. The actors were well-cast and the characters had a very believable aspect to them. Many a person’s favorites of these would be Capt. Picard and Commander Data. Capt. Picard was just one of the greatest leading roles ever, and just had a commanding presence. Data was the human-like android computer, (similar to C-3P0 of Star Wars), who added a sense of humor to the show. TNG had one of the greatest producers, Rick Berman, working on it. They continued their TV voyage up until 1993. It’s 7-season run was one of the greatest for any Science-Fiction television show. Their movies ended with Nemesis in 2002.
Deep Space Nine and Voyager are two more spin-offs that occasionally featured former TNG characters, like Commander Worf and Commander Riker. DS9 ran from 1992 to 1999. It’s notable characters included Captain Benjamin Sisko, Commander Worf, and Jax-(who later married Worf). Voyager ran from 1995 to 2001. It’s crew included Captain Janeway- who was the first female captain in Star Trek, The Doctor, and Commander Chakotay. Each series has had an average of about six seasons.
.
Veteran Sci-Fi actor Scott Bakula brought back to life the world of Star Trek in 2000. As Voyager ended, Enterprise began. Also, Brent Spiner, who had acted as Commander Data on TNG, came to this show as his creator, Noonien Suung. Enterprise was the most recent series, but only went on for four seasons. This television season will be the first time in nearly 20 years that there hasn't been a Star Trek series on TV, (besides those in syndication). People online have had petitions, hoping that they will bring it back, just to have a show in production in their 40th year. It is unlikely that they will though.
The most recent buzz heard regarding Star Trek is that they are
planning the 11th movie, which will take place about 100 years BK,(before
Kirk), like in Enterprise. Fans look forward to it because it is introducing a whole new cast, and will hopefully explain the formation of the Federation and the development of conflicts and friendships between Humans and other species that they encounter. Although many wouldn’t mind another TNG movie, but those actors are getting older and plot lines aren’t as good as they once were. There are many games based on the Star Trek franchise. The Original Series and subsequent series have started coming out on DVD format and are still on VHS. There is a good chance more people will become fans because of this.
Star Trek has been a great addition to today’s pop culture. There would be no knowledge of Klingons, Tribbles, Romulans, Vulcans, or Ferengi. Without it we wouldn’t have great lines like, “Beam me up Scotty!”(which was never really on the show…), “Dammit Jim, I’m a doctor not a auto-mechanic!”, “All hands to battle stations!”, “Red Alert!” and “Engage!” This has been one of the greatest creations and Gene Roddenberry should be revered for his contribution to Americana.
