When squirrels attack.

I got bit by a squirrel.

That's right, you heard me. I got bit by a squirrel. Clean through the fingernail on my left pinkie. While I was trying to save it's life no less!

I heard a terrified squeak from outside, a grey blur and my cat on the chase. I raced downstairs to find a frightened and very pissed off squirrel penned in by three cats, ours and a neighbour's cat, Salem.

Charlie chased it across the road and I chased him off. The poor thing was lying still, completely done in by the looks of it, which enabled me to pick it up. However, I forgot that squirrels could bite. Or maybe I thought the thing would be too done in to fight me. It bit me with it's one remaining canine, and bit me again before I could get it inside. I dropped it, went for a towel. Second round and I got it, but it's time was up. It never survived my attempt to move it to safety, I left it under a bush, where I am pretty sure it died.

As a potential birder and conservationist, I am supposed to hate squirrels. Doesn't mean that I will let 3 cats harass one to death. After loads of phone calls to NHS direct and the out of hours surgery, I had a very bored doctor take a little glance at it and pass it off as OK. However, I'm pretty sure I'll at least lose the nail and may get an infection. We'll have to wait and see.
