Portland doesn't care about children being crushed to death

What's the point in living in such a supposedly liberal city if they won't even fund schools? My daughter goes to one of the schools that needs to be rebuilt. But I guess now we just have to live with the knowledge that if there's an earthquake here sometime in the next eight years during school hours my kid will die.

That's upsetting! I read an article today about how a proposition for a $5 tax to repair the Sellwood Bridge was rejected. You wanna talk about scary as hell, it's all these bridges in the country that are falling apart and not actually safe for cars anymore. Remember when that bridge collapsed a few years ago? I think it was in Minnesota. After that happened the ratings assessments on bridges around the country circulated publicly and it was shocking how many of the bridges that are currently in use for heavy traffic are rated even lower than the one that collapsed.

I don't know what the answer is, but I think emphasis should definitely be put on maintaining and restoring what we've got, not just saying fuck it and building new.

It seems a lot of average slightly-right-of-center voters feel that people without children, or with grown children, shouldn't have to pay property taxes to fund schools. Personally, I think that's a very short-sighted attitude. How would our schools have been if our childless neighbors and our grandparents didn't fund them?
