A different take on that whole scene. Ianto still thinking of Jack first.

I imagined Ianto's Mam (and Tad) as having passed away, and Ianto finds it still helpful to talk to her by writing a letter when he needs to - but it's not so important that a reader knows that. I figured it might skew the story to one of pity for Ianto instead of (what I hope evertyone gets) the hope, the trepidation and the determination behind the capable, coolmeister.

That's interesting. Do we actually know anything in canon about Ianto's family? I always imagine them as either dead, or a huge family living on a farm and speaking Welsh. Two different extremes. :P

I suppose I'm weaving a bit of real life in there in that I read GDL used to go to his Mum when he needed advice, but since she died he's found JB a good mentor. I did the usual fan thing and fused the actor with his role and the fic appeared. Writing to a dead person as if they are alive is quite common and is supposed to be good therapy too.
I too know of nothing in canon about his family background.
