The cold stone wall was slippery under jinki’s hands and he had troubles keeping himself up even without his tendency to fall over. The air was crisp with the smell of rain, but the clouds were already moving away to reveal a starry sky.
“Jinki?” a voice whispered somewhere above, ushering him to climb faster and Jinki obeyed with a smile on his face.
It took him a few more minutes to hoist himself onto the balcony and brush the dirt of his jacket and trousers, trying to make himself at least somewhat presentable. His movements were followed by a pair of surprised eyes - always surprised - even after months of secret meetings witnessed only by the moon.
“Jinki,” Kibum muttered in a voice filled with longing before flinging himself into the older man’s arms. “I thought you wouldn’t come this time - there were rumours and...”
“Don’t worry.”
Bunching the thin fabric of Kibum’s nightgown up in his hands, the man drew his lover as close as humanly possible, his hot breath bringing goose bumps on Kibum’s delicate skin.
“Maybe we shouldn’t see each other anymore,” Kibum said quietly between kissing away the pearls of sweat on Jinki’s neck. “They might kill you, are prepared to kill you if you step on these grounds and the security’s tightened even more after that incident with your friends.”
Jinki grabbed his lover - the future baron of these lands - by his shoulders and created some distance between them to achieve eye contact.
“I had nothing to do with that,” he rasped out, desperation laced in his tone, “they acted on their own accord - I asked them to stay away since our families are at war. I knew nothing until they returned to the mansion, bloodied up and...”
He lowered his head as his hands fell to his side weakly. “Maybe you’re right.”
Kibum wanted to argue, to be proven wrong, but Jinki cut him to it, his handsome face pulled to a grimace by emotions too intense to be put in words.
“Maybe I shouldn’t come anymore. Per-perhaps you could find someone who could love you fully - not only in the shadows. I’m... I’m so sorry for the pain I’ve caused you,” he let his gaze wander over the wide gardens, ignoring Kibum’s warm fingers on his upper arm.“Do you... remember when we met and then - hid in the bushes that one day? And you said that I light up your world, that I’m your sun?”
Biting on his lower lip with worry, Kibum nodded, taking another shy step closer.
“Well, then maybe you’re the mysterious moon. Out of reach, never to be mine.”
“No,” Kibum said softly, hugging Jinki from behind and resting his head on the man’s shoulder. He racked his head for an appropriate response, one that could blow the insecurities out of Jinki’s mind and then leaned up to speak directly into his ear.
“It’s okay, Jinki,” it was his turn to comfort the other, “even if you cannot always be by my side and we’re separated by great distances. Even if we have to lie and sneak around to be together, even if the whole world is against us. I only wish for you to be safe, because it’s okay, I’m okay. We’ll be alright.”
Jinki’s back was less stiff, giving Kibum the possibility to turn him around. The man was still wearing that awfully heartbreaking expression, full of regret and doubt.
“This is a world where you exist and I’ve had the chance of meeting and loving you. That’s all that matters.”
Kibum didn’t see Jinki’s reaction to his confession, but he felt it in the kiss they shared and soon, Jinki had swept Kibum off his feet and was twirling them around, peppering his lover’s face with adoring pecks. The noble teen had a hard time muffling his giggles even after Jinki put him down, keeping his arms tightly wound around Kibum’s waist.
They didn’t have much time until the first rays of sun started peeking over the horizon, splitting them apart once more.
“I’ll be back, I’ll be careful, I’ll find a way” Jinki said, pressing his lips to Kibum’s kiss-swollen ones for the last time as a way of bidding goodbye before making his escape, “I promise you.”
