On internet writing

Hey, writer friends. Fanfiction or otherwise.

How do you deal with public criticism on your work? In comments, reviews, etc.

Do you feel like it keeps other readers from leaving positive feedback? Opens the door for more criticism? Happy that someone took the time to point out weaknesses?

Unfortunately, any time you put something on the Internet, it's fair game. There are all kinds of trolls out there who use the anonymity to act like assholes. I feel like you have to roll with it and not take it too seriously because it comes with the territory. Getting trolled doesn't actually mean there's anything wrong with your work.

I don't think it discourages other people from commenting positively. People do or don't say whatever they want. And on the rare occasion someone actually gives you constructive criticism, it's probably because you had a reader who cared about the piece and genuinely wants it to be better.

Thank them for their input. Make the changes that you think are valid, stet the ones you don't agree with, and move on with your life.

If they are hostile, ignore. Do not do not do not take the bait. Don't be Jackie Howett. Not that I believe that you would, but when somebody is openly nasty about your work, your best action as an author is to be silent.
