Legend of Korra season finale

Jun 27, 2012 20:44

For those of you who don't know, I am an avid Avatard. I loved The Last Airbender, so when Korra came out, I was thrilled. It didn't disappoint for the entirety of the first season - elenuial and I loved it - and we followed faithfully.

Until we watched the finale tonight. Hoo boy, was that not how I would have ended it.

Cut for spoilers. )

Honestly, I feel that way about the entire season. It felt rushed and choppy and, honestly, I didn't care anywhere near as much as I did about TLA. Part of the problem, I think, was the lack of scope. Don't get me wrong, Amon & Equalizing could have been a global problem, but it wasn't. It was contained within the one city and while I felt for the benders living there, it lacked the grandeur of trying to save an entire world.

Another issue I had was I didn't really root for anyone. In TLA, I felt for Zuko, the lost prince who only wanted to regain his honor; Aang, the last of his kind and dealing with the weight of being the Avatar; Sokka, the only non-bender in the group, Toph, who's just fucking awesome, Azula, badass; Iroh, WHO I DEFY YOU NOT TO LOVE. Character after character that was fully-developed, interesting, and worth caring about. I don't feel that anyone in the new series had that depth I was expecting, other than Lin. Hell, everything about the new series felt so much more...surface and shallow ( ... )

I didn't feel especially drawn to many characters. Though Tenzin's son's Fartbending was a hilarious one-time joke.

Oh, that first statement's a lie - Lin Beifong is my hero.

I agree- something disappointing that I realized about halfway through was that nearly all of the characters EXCEPT for Korra and Mako were at least interesting, if a little one dimensional. I know it was a limitation of having only 12 episodes to work with- you've got to prioritize plot over characters, but seriously. The Lieutenant, who never even got a name was more potentially interesting than Korra. And Mako's just a douche.
