Just had a thought...

You know when the marauders were at school - well, isn't it a bit weird that Lupin was the only prefect amoung the four yet James was still made Head Boy in their seventh year?

I don't think there's anything in it - it just seems a bit daft, eh?

Well, much as I love Lupin, he wasn't exactly the best prefect was he? A lot like Ron in that he never did much to stop trouble from happening (at least when Sirius and James were involved). Sirius says that James becomes more mature in his sixth year, so maybe by seventh year he was finally prefect material. It makes sense to have a headboy that is both mature and has leadership skills. By that time they were probably in some of the fiercest years of the war, and Dumbledore would have wanted a headboy and girl he know were on the side of good. Even though James hadn't been a prefect he was certain 'Dumbledore's man, through and through' and would have comanded the respect of the rest of the students, thus making him ideal for the position.

All that is just speculation, of course.
