Chapter 29 -- The Phoenix Lament

Jul 06, 2006 12:03

In which Fleur shows class, Tonks makes a scene, Harry is stupid, selfish and insensitive, and we are told repeatedly that Gandalf Rasputin Dumbledore is DEAD.

Also, there is an abundance of swooning, continuity is deader than James and Lily, and I quote Monty Python. )

Agreed about Tonks, McGonagall, Hermione, and Ginny. Get out of the way and let Fleur and Luna run the show.

It would be nice if the fighting were more believable. I don't mind the lack of foreshadowing for Remus/Tonks so much, but it would have been nice. Maybe JKR could have involved them more in the book, and had them get together at Christmas, or in the next book.

Loved the "Dead Parrot Sketch" filk. Bravo.

"... I don't think [Snape] knew they were coming."

This is illogical.

I think it fits. Draco clearly wanted Snape to stay far away from his little venture, and Voldie was doing his best Dumbledore imitation by leaving the killing of The Only Wizard You-Know-Who Ever Feared to a 16 year-old. Really, if Draco didn't want to tell Snape the DE's were coming, how would Snape know?

Moreover, since the other Death Eaters weren't holding [the Hand of Glory], wouldn't they have been as much in the dark as anyone else?

I have this picture of a conga line in my head, everyone holding onto the shoulders of the person in front, Draco leading. Maybe even singing:

We're going to kill Dumby!
Hey!
We're going to kill Dumby!
Hey!
We're going to kill Dumby!
Hey!

Might just be me.

I'm starting to feel bludgeoned by JKR's insistence that Dumbledore is dead, do you hear me, DEAD!

Yet half of fandom is still convinced Dumbledore is just faking it. What's an author to do?

Oh, that wasn't what I meant. I was talking about Minerva blaming herself for Snape's actions being illogical.

Frankly, I would have just stated he was dead once, maybe twice, and had all the characters react to his death with varying degrees of grief, unhappiness, anger and shock. That would have made far more sense.

I love the idea of the conga line!

Ah. Sorry. I'll give that reading comprehension thing a try. I hear there are some benefits.

Yay Monty Python!

I agree with many of the things you said- About Fleur liking Bill, and about Remus being so so about Tonks.

I would like to point out that BECAUSE JK mentioned DD's death NINETEEN times- don't you think he's NOT going to be dead now? I mean- wouldn't it make sense for her to totally set it up that way, to say it so many times that everyone has gotten used to it, and then to SPRING HIS NON-DEAD-NESS IN OUR FACES? I mean- the phoenix symbolism is too prominent to just lay dorment. Think X-Men!

I'm very much afraid that's exactly what she's going to do. And I will hate her for it, because the set-up was so clumsy and Dumbledore so unsympathetic and obnoxious that at this point I wish he had never EXISTED.

feverishly collecting more reasons to hate him, to swear vengeance.

Yes, this is the kid whose power of love is going to defeat Voldemort.

Hagrid's willing to teach anyone who wants to learn

*snigger*. Oh, I missed that first time round. Yeah, people are so willing to learn from him that as soon as his class stops being required they - all drop out. Good one.

Better authors than JKR have failed to convince me of Remus/Tonks. In the only story that ever made that scene believeable, Tonks was actually undercover elsewhere as Bellatrix, and the Tonks we see is a polyjuiced Sirius - the hair color thing was because he could never get the spells right. The inappropriate declaration of love was because Sirius' sense of timing is a bit lacking.

Didn't think to put it in memories, so I've lost it. I'm hoping someone else recognises it - it was cute.
