Dollhouse

Ok, so I'm going to try to kick start my blog a bit again. Hopefully I'll manage to write something interesting. But start off with just sharing some of my thoughts about various things without getting too deep. I figured Dollhouse would be a good place to start.

I have to admit, after watching the first two episodes last night, that I quite enjoyed them. Perhaps it is as a result of lowered expectations (having heard so much about how they sucked on the internet). I think that the show has definitely got potential, but for now it has definitely got enough to keep me watching.

As some-one on the SFX Forums said:

‘Agent Ballard's storyline is rather odd - wouldn't it be far more dramatic if he encountered Echo in various different guises and gradually came to realise she was being brainwashed and uncovering the truth step by step, rather than start with him already knowing everything? And why would he turn down an offer of free lasagne? The man is seriously disturbed...’

And I wholeheartedly agree. I think that the FBI agent who knows there is something going on, but none of his fellow agents believe him and make fun out of him for it, is so over done. I hope that this storyline goes somewhere more interesting.

It is a bit predictable in places (the guy taking her out to the woods being a Psycho, Echo starting to remember details of her imprints), and there are some bits that look like they will head in predictable patterns, FBI agents neighbour being a Dollhouse plant (possible, but I hope it is a red herring). Hopefully Joss will take this in more interesting directions. Also it seems like every assignment (or whatever they call it) will go wrong in some way, which could be annoying, but I understand the dramatic Imperative.

The stuff with alpha looks interesting, and I like the idea that we don’t really root for the Dollhouse (as it is pretty clearly an organisation of dubious morality) but the person who is trying to take it down also looks to be rather psychotic.

Things I'm interested to know, above the obvious:

Does The Dollhouse really see its self as a positive organisation? If it is powerfull enough to make people disapear, why does it wait for people to volenteer for the programme? Do people volenteer? or are they manipulated into it? Why does it not just grab people off the street? Do they really let people go after a 5 year term?

There does seem to be enough to keep me interested, avove and beyond the obvious fetishistic angle of 'Eliza Dusku in a different sexy outfit each week' and the underling 'examination of wish fulfillment and exploitation' that we are promised.

Oh, and as a note, avoid the Wikipedia page, as it has some relatively large spoilers on it that I stumbled across looking for some details of the character names (damit).
