Shawn, my response was too short. I hope you don't mind me posting it? Here it is ( Read more... )

So, Mr. Ruiz, do you think less of me because I actually AM Mormon? Well?

LESS of you? hdplayer8 May 17 2006, 03:42:12 UTC
Of course not. I think less of no one because of their religion. One of the things I love most about where we live is that we have the freedom to belive as we wish. On a civic level, I can respect that, and always will. However, I would be foolish to say that we "all believe the same thing." That is certainly not the case. Different religions all have differing beliefs: Mormonism differs greatly from Christianity. We belive differnt things about Jesus, God, Heaven, and our roles in Heaven. Those are just the beginning, but I'm sure you know the rest. It's not that I'm trying to pick a fight (if you remember, I was quite respectful when I found out you were a Mormom; and I always will be); all I am trying to do is have an intellectual discussion about truth, God, and how we can know anything at all ( ... )

"freedom to believe as we wish"

If only there were more people like you.

Most people don't get that.
They take it for granted.

I enjoyed reading your responce to Tickle and agree with the majority of what you say, as I said it myself in another such response. However, I am confused with your definition in what a "Christian" is. Is it a Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, etc., or all of them. You seem to have left out Mormons in your discussion and replied to someone noting a difference between that faction and "Christianity." I have always been taught that a Christian is someone who believes in Jesus as their lord and savior, who was sent to earth by God to pay the penalty of sin, death. Now, if you are going to let minute differences in doctrine sway you to believe that someone is not a Christian, then I would have to say that it is not Mr. Tickle who you should be dissappointed with, but yourself.
Thats enough religious ranting for now, but I could go on for ethernity.
JD....if you don't know who I am, then ask someone. I am sure they will inform you.

My response! shawntickle May 17 2006, 02:21:06 UTC
First of all, I will be glad to respond, but I am not entirely sure what you mean by not responding before. I long ago added a comment to my original post, responding to both what you and Johnathan had to say about my theology. I have written two updates on the subject since then, and I have even responded to the justifiably hurt feelings of one of Mormon students. Sorry if there was some misunderstanding, but I am trying to be careful, helpful, and assertive at the same time ( ... )

The disagreements that we should discuss shawntickle May 17 2006, 03:06:28 UTC
I will separate this part of the discussion though because I know that I will shortly run out of space in my original comment, and I do want to separate the discussion of our differences from the discussion of our commonalities ( ... )

One last thing for tonight. shawntickle May 17 2006, 03:11:39 UTC
I also know that we will probably always disagree about the state of salvation for members of faiths that we do not find acceptable ourselves. And, while I do want to discuss that matter with you as well, I do believe that we should consider these previously mentioned points of disagreement first.

And, I need to sleep now.

Thanks for caring enough to write about this matter. I have not had a discussion this productive in many moons.

And thanks to you as well. I will write more later on these matters. For now, I am also in dire need of sleep, especially after reading such poor essays from my seniors...not a great way to end an evening!

Mr. Ruiz, Mormons ARE Christians. Don't tell me they're not, b/c I am one and I DO know what I'm talking about. I'm sorry if I seem rude; that is not my intention. But when you said that he COULD be a Mormon and you would still respect him, it seemed as though you were trying to say that Mormons are undesirable and that it is hard to respect them. I DO respect your opinions, but I just want you to understand my side as well. Talk to y'all later.

Some clarification hdplayer8 May 18 2006, 03:33:00 UTC
When I said that Mr. Tickle COULD be Mormon and still have my respect, my point was simply this: He could have any belief system--one quite different from my own--and that belief system would have no bearing on how I feel about him. Whether I agree with his religious ideals is not grounds for respect. That was all I was saying, and made my point clearly. My choice of words was specific, as it related to our conversation ( ... )
