When 'okay' is not okay...

This particular slang word is beginning to irritate me. Actually, it's not the word 'okay' itself rather its usage. To explain, I'm currently reading Dan Brown's latest release 'The Lost Symbol' because manga releases are few this time of the month. I feel like I probably do this a lot, but I think it's more acceptable in conversation than in literature. SYNONYMS, DAN BROWN, USE THEM.
