Poetry...

Some prose for all of you: When attempting to "get in touch with their spiritual sides" human beings reared in Western culture will often make recourse to poetry to express their feelings. This, they feel, makes the emotions deeper and more significant. This... is pure nonsense. If one wishes to express themselves in a coherent ( Read more... )

You know, some of us actually want to be remembered in 50 years. If poetry is the only way I can do that, then I'll write poetry, but I sure hope that's not my only option. I suck at lyrical poetry. I really consider my prose my poetry.

As to what Cheyenne has just said: I'm not trying to be remembered fifty years from now, I just write it because I can and I like to, or at least most of the time.

Now for the post itself..... I can't put most of my feelings into normal words. I have to put them as I think them, and I obviously don't think like a normal human. I think in abstract ways. Like my poem "Another Innocent Dies" when I was writing it I was literally thinking of myself as a black sheep and that I had received a mortal wound from one I had thought was my friend (the poem isn't based on reality, I just like writing stories and this one came out in poem format).

If prose is what you write to express your feelings, go right ahead. I just have to throw in an extra step when I do that to make it coherent.

Here you are mistaken my friend. A prosaic writer speaks of emotion, while a poet does not. In a prosaic sentence you will read of love, but in a poetic sentence, you will feel it. Know this! Prose is the language of the revolution, spoken by those who overthrew their kings in the time following the thunder in the forest! Poetry is subconscious and will thus always survive. Notice that when you write in prose, you tend to create certain sentence arrangements. Nearly everyone does it, until grammar instructors beat it out of them. I noticed it a few days ago in some of my elementary school writings. The question then, in deciding whether to use poetry or prose is, do I wish to be heard, or felt?
