The Bear Trap

I had an idea tonight... well, technically this morning. The idea is somewhat ridiculous, like most of my great ideas, but I think this one could actually work. Okay, at it's root, the idea is this: a magazine about us. And by "us", I don't mean us as a crew or even "us" as Mercer students. I speak instead of "us" as a group of people of ( Read more... )

That's cool. To tell you the truth, I was actually thinking of you as a possible contributor anyway. I figured you could at least have a featured rant every issue. It would probably be quite a popular feature.

You might have to refine your target audience a bit more. I mean, if you write enough irreverent commentaries you could eventually alienate everybody in town. The people who agree about Chi Hos would enjoy the magazine, but everyone else wouldn't. Okay, so you don't care about the people who don't agree with you. Take the group of people who are still reading and assume that your next controversial article cuts that audience in half. While many people probably agree with you on some things, very few people probably agree with you on all things.

The report on the Chi O's would be an in depth bit of research into whether or not they deserved their reputation, thus it shouldn't be offensive. Besides, people aren't as easily offended as you seem to think.

I'm not saying that people are easily offended. I'm just saying that people will have to agree with more than half of the things you write in order to be interested. If everything you write is inflamatory, people aren't going to read just to disagree with you in the same way that people don't listen to Jeff Scott just to talk about how wrong he is. Rather, they won't read at all, and your little magazine will fade into obscurity.

Of course, obscurity may be better than nothing. Can I contribute? Perhaps not to the Chi Ho piece, but I'm a fairly decent in-depth reporter.

You've left out an important point. Who is going to do this "in-depth research to see whether they deserve thier reputation? You know what? I think I'll nominate you. The "research" would at least be fun and enjoyble. You might learn something. (Snicker)
