Disclaimer: Title taken from "Hey Summer" by the Bigger Lights

The red sky of sunset draws in Hyukjae’s attention as he sits on the porch, leg swinging off the side, to and fro to some imaginary melody playing in his head. He drifts off, head on the guardrail, mind still full of that melody.

His eyes open widely when he hears the strum of a guitar and turns towards its sound, only to spot Donghae, his neighbor sitting on his own porch. Hyukjae smiles uncontrollably, trying to hide it by moving his head back to its original position, facing away from the guitar player nearby.

But Donghae notices because he returns the smile, as well as decides to make his way over to Hyukjae’s yard, guitar strapped around him. He strums the same few chords and his cheerful smile warms Hyukjae’s heart. He clears his throat, and looks away which only encourages Donghae even more.

He walks up the stairs and sits down on the top, a few feet away from Hyukjae, playing his guitar and humming along with the tune. He acts as if he’s in his own little world, distant from Hyukjae, as far away as possible.

Hyukjae sighs twice, once more loudly than the other. He doesn’t seem to catch Donghae’s attention which frustrates him. He pretends to go back to his original dozed place, closing his eyes and resting his head on the guardrail. He can see a red haze behind his eyelids and feels a warm sensation on his tanned skin.

But something doesn’t feel right. He notices the music from Donghae’s guitar is silenced and he starts to feel as if Donghae isn’t where he last saw him.

Hyukjae opens his eyes and sees Donghae sitting right in front of him, a simple smile on his face. His large brown eyes are staring back at Hyukjae which causes the other to grow embarrassed. His cheeks redden and his forehead (as well as his hands) starts to perspire profusely. He bites his lip before attempting to simply laugh it off.

But Donghae’s stare just grows more intense. Hyukjae starts to move back, feeling uncomfortable because of all the newfound attention thrust upon him. He looks for an escape but finds himself a bit unwilling to run away. He sits up straight, arm wrapped around the column supporting the porch. He grows shy, but a smile forms on his face, his gums exposed above bright white teeth.

Now Donghae is the one blushing, looking away and trying to find his own escape. But before he can make a move, Hyukjae reaches out and grabs his hand.

He smiles, widely; his gums are showing again and something about the way he looks makes Donghae shake a little. Hyukjae doesn’t give it a second thought, and before Dongahe realizes it, he’s pulled the other boy into a kiss.

It’s gentle enough to make the two of them want to more but there’s enough depth in it that no words need to be said. The pair exchange smiles when they’re done, and youthful giggles that seem to light up the whole porch.

Donghae initiates a kiss this time, causing butterflies to appear in Hyukjae’s stomach. He closes his eyes, opens them slowly after Donghae pulls away.

They stare at each other, but there isn’t a drop of awkwardness in the air. Rather the comfort that comes when two best friends become something more.

Hyukjae bites his lip, appearing nervous before asking Donghae if he’d like to come into the house. He’s ecstatic when Donghae agrees. As they walk inside, Donghae leaves his guitar on the table in the foyer and doesn’t look back.

Night falls and Hyukjae isn’t the least bit chilled by the nighttime summer breeze that blows into his window. He’s full of warmth as he lays next to Donghae in his bed, covers pulled up to their shoulders, hugging their bodies.

He kisses a dozing Donghae on the cheek and snuggles closer to him, drifting off as well.
