While Lucy never, never lost sight of the fact that Sam wasn't actually her own - she and the girl had too much in common for that, both having lost most of the people close to them, though it wasn't like she ever said as much aloud - there was something about seeing Pete with her that felt unbelievably good, like a pleasant sort of warmth. Taking on a job like this had been fairly impulsive and had proven to be exhausting, but that was one of many reasons not to regret it. The pros outweighed the cons by far, moments like this tending to be the most content she felt.
Sam distracted by trying to carefully shape a tower, Lucy grinned in response to Pete's question, that alone hopefully saying enough. "You're a natural," she said, not only referring to the building process, though she wasn't inclined to get outwardly sentimental enough to say so. Pete was just so good with her that it would have been difficult not to enjoy watching them together. "I think this might just be among the best sandcastles I've seen."
