[Private to Harry Potter]
Mr Potter Harry,
Last night, I met with the Headmistress to discuss a disturbing possibility -- when the Aurors came through Hogwarts a few weeks ago, I think they might have used the opportunity to plant listening devices all throughout the castle. I don't have any definite proof of this, but it is not outside of the realm of possibility. To that end, you should consider the possibility that anything you may have said over the past few weeks, regardless of where you said it or to whom you were speaking, was overheard by someone in the Ministry.
Professor McGonagall plans to work with Professor Flitwick and Professor Lupin to determine if (and if so, where) the listening devices have been planted. It will be difficult work, because the Ministry cannot know that we know the devices are there. However, if we are successful in keeping this secret, we can use the devices for our own purposes and thereby play the Ministry at their own game.
I do not know who else Professor McGonagall has spoken to about this, but you are the first person I have mentioned this concern to besides her. If the Ministry did plant these devices, I can only suppose that your dormitory room is one of the most closely listened-to rooms in the entire castle.
I beg you to use your best judgement in dealing with this knowledge. I can't swear you to secrecy on this -- officially, I know nothing of it -- but please be careful whom you tell. If this turns out to be my own paranoia getting the better of me, though I doubt it it would cause even more trouble for the school if this unfounded rumour were to spread.
One further thing. Last night, Professor McGonagall informed me (at my own request) about the prophecy that you mentioned in your message to the Order. I honestly do not know what I can say to you, except to tell you that there are people here who care about you and will do their best to keep you from harm. My office door is always open if you should have need of it...and while I realise that you've spent enough time in the infirmary as it stands, I've been informed that it is infinitely preferable to be there as a guest, rather than as a student or a patient.
There have been too many secrets recently, and I am fully behind the Headmistress in her determination to change this.
Madam Pomfrey
[Private to Minerva]
I've written the parchment message to Harry. Please let me know if Remus or Filius have any ideas as to what should be done. And should someone inform the Order as a whole about this, or would it be better to wait and see if this is something more than my own paranoia?
[Private]
And even that, I fear, will not be enough.
Working on my lesson plans seems so useless now. But if we are to have business as usual, then the usual things must be taken care of first.
