Retsu stands at 5'2" and weights 99 lbs. She looks to be in her thirties, although truthfully she is really much older than that, by many centuries. She has dark blue eyes that often hold a warmth to them, but mess with her division and you might just see that iciness slide into them as she gives a not so pleasant smile. Also, she has long black hair that is tied in a braid in front of her.
She is rather short, but that shouldn't fool anyone. Stats wise, she is actually a fairly strong woman, ranking quite high, but if you were to look at her, she appears to be a gentle and soft-spoken woman.
Retsu wears the typical captain attire, consisting of the captain's jacket, the uniform with an obi and the sandals. Her zanpakutou is actually fairly big and is often carried over her shoulder if Isane is not carrying it.

Looking at Retsu, the air that she gives off is one of a mild mannered and soft-spoken woman. Her bearing often portrays that. She is modestly covered with her hair falling in a braid before her. She is short in stature and stands politely at meetings, hands cupped delicately before her. The way she speaks tells of this too. Her voice is gentle, a healers voice that calms and soothes her patients, and she often uses honorifics when addressing everyone. There is usually a please within her requests and she is not a person who raises her voice. When running behind Ichigo, she inquires if she would be able to run before him. When he brushes it off, saying it is okay, she simply repeats the request again, which in turn Ichigo understands really isn’t a request and allows her to pass him. Even with her enemies, she can be considered polite. She introduces herself to the arrancar and tells them that they are simply there to heal injuries and had no intention
of fighting. When those who are uninjured turn and run, she tells Isane that they will heal Sado, but that they will also heal the wounded arrancar as well.
Retsu is a healer and a captain, and those are two very important things when looking at her personality. She has a responsibility not only to her division, but also to all the divisions in Soul Society. Although she is a pleasant mannered woman, she is also a woman of force. The fourth is looked down upon, but Retsu does not let things slide if someone is insulting her division. She is neither brash nor rude and hell would likely freeze over before she swore. Instead, she simply states that 'as long as you are still inside this building, your lives are in our hands' with a smile when two shinigami had been making trouble to some of her division and afterward moves on to speak about the weather. It is those almost subtle threats behind her words. She might be nice, but she can also have a hard edge to her, using her words and that particular staring look when people are moving out of line. While one could make the mistake that she is a pushover, they
would be wrong. Even Mayuri has been on the end of her tongue. While she tells him that she has faith in his abilities, she also states that if he were to come all the way to Hueco Mundo, analyze the research material he found from the arrancar scientist and the garganta that he created was a failure, that she could only imagine how Urahara Kisuke would laugh… After all, she knows full well that Mayuri is a proud man, especially in regards to Kisuke.
And although she does seek to aid her division, she is not easy on them either, expecting them to behave as would befit someone from the fourth. When Hanatarou helps the ryoka and is brought back to her, she tells him that he helped them to caused a lot more damage than they otherwise would have been able to do alone. She also points out that he has a responsibility and that that responsibility was not helping them. That was not something that she could ignore.
Retsu is also a very intelligent woman. She is a healer, as stated, and has a vast amount of knowledge when it comes to healing, whether through conventional methods or through unconventional ones. Her years of being a captain have given her a fountain of knowledge in that concern and she uses that information to help heal those under her care and counteract any ailments that they might have. She is good at analyzing details and is very perceptive. Although she could not place her finger on what exactly, Retsu was aware that there was something odd about Aizen Sousuke's body. Prior to the discovery of Sousuke's betrayal, Retsu had also pieced together where something might be going on. She understood that entry to the Seijoutouyorin was forbidden and that if someone wanted to conceal their presence, it was the best hiding place. There she found Sousuke.
She is not a miracle worker either. She knows that you can heal the body, but that the will to survive needs to be there too. Retsu also does not accept unnecessary thanks. When Shinji offers it for the aid that she had provided, she merely asks him why he is thanking her, for she needs no thanks for saving the lives of their allies. She is not a fighter like it would be in other divisions even though she is well trained at the sword- that being one of her hobbies. Yet, as she states to Isane, that their duty is not to spill blood, but rather to stop it. Nor, does she point out, is there any reason to chase those that run away. She places her trust in the hands of people who deserve it and although she isn’t mean, she can and will have a hardness to her being if the need arises, but otherwise is a woman who seems well placed in her duties as a healer.

2. Enhanced Abilities. Compared to the average human being, shinigami have greater endurance, strength and agility. They are able to take a considerable amount of damage before they are seriously injured. Also, as Retsu is a captain, her spiritual energy is much greater than most shinigami.
3. Kidou. These are techniques that shinigami use. It focuses their spiritual energy into a magical spell. There are a variety of these techniques that have been shown.
4. Shunpo. While Retsu is not on the same scale as Yoruichi, like all shinigami, she does possess this ability. It allows her to move quickly, covering great distances in a single step. She is of average ability for a captain in this regard.
5. Zanpakutou. This is a blade that is the physical manifestation of a shinigami's soul. As such, Retsu does have swordmanship skills, particularly in the kendo fighting style.
Retsu's blade is called Minazuki. In sword form, it resembles a nodachi. Unsealed, it bears the appearance of a one-eyed giant flying manta-ray. As for abilities, to date the bankai has not yet been shown. This is the second and final release of the zanpakutou and not all are able to achieve it. As for what is known about the shikai, or initial form, when released, as stated above, the blade morphs into a green creature. It has the ability to fly which means that it can transport people on its back. It can also transport people within its mouth. Almost like a plane, it can make little feet appear when it lands and like Retsu, it heals. Those that are swallowed and kept within its stomach are exposed to the healing medicines that it has. At Retsu's word, it will spit the healed people back out.

All things considered, Retsu is actually a very strong person. Yet, despite her abilities, like anyone else, she does have weaknesses and fears. In a sense, she is old-fashioned. While there is nothing wrong with being polite, that mentality that she bears does give the impression that people can push around her squad. I’d say her fears tie into her squad. The 4th isn’t a squad based on bold personalities or even violent ones. They are the healers. As such, they are often looked down upon, but Retsu cares deeply about her squad and the people within it.
Violence for the sake of violence would make her uncomfortable. She is a healer not a harmer. Her duty and everything she has done has been to heal people, and as shown in the manga, she heals all. This includes allies and even arrancar. In that way, getting the upper hand on her would include violence or harming those that she cares about. She is not someone who openly fights and lets others run away if there is no reason for them to do so. Life is what is precious to her. Her soft spots include people, especially those within her division, but even caring for other shinigami- and humans- in general. As far as being embarrassed, Retsu is someone who takes things in stride and has not been show to be flustered at all in the manga. If you want to annoy her, injure people for no reason, be rude or insult or belittle those in her division.

Are you awake, stranger?
Those words still rang through her mind. All of it did, if one truly got down to it. She had been surprised to wake up in a room unlike any she had ever seen, at least outside of her mind. More surprised, perhaps, but the appearance of a tall stranger. Retsu wasn't one to be easily put off her game or flustered, but she had to admit that she had been left reeling, if only a little.
She had been in Seireitei in her division. It wasn't unusual, as she had been there for many years now. Even with the war with Aizen Sousuke finished, there was still a fair share of wounds to heal. One could not say that being a shinigami was easy work, and it was her job and the job of her division to not only clean up in general, but to look after people as well. Retsu was no longer there though nor did she have the faintest idea how that had actually happened. When push came to shove, that was the disturbing part, that she could so easily be taken from the warmth of her quarters and brought to this strange place.
She had been handed that map, gently accepting it from the stranger with a soft word of thanks. She might not appreciate what had been done to her, but it did not mean she would be rude because of that. No, she had sat there and listened as he has spoken, answering her questions. Retsu couldn't say that she had liked most of the answers to her questions but she had appreciated the fact that they had been answered. There was a touch of annoyance that fluttered briefly across her face. She hadn't yelled though. She hadn't thrown things. She hadn't gotten angry beyond words, fuming and raging. Instead, she had sat there, listening, contemplating.
Were there things this stranger was holding back? Retsu had no doubt about that. One didn't do things like this and explain everything. What to do... Retsu still puzzled over some of the things he had said. Her fingers brushed against her cheek. Should you notice...
Retsu wasn't too sure what to make of that, nor of the fact that she had been told that she would need to indulge in the more pleasurable qualities of the flesh. Oh, it wasn't as if sex bothered her. She was a healer, after all, and had seen a variety of bodies. She had healed young and old and she was no prude. No, for Retsu, the troubling fact was that she had no choice- no choice in anything, it seemed. While there had been situations over the years that had put her in a tough situation, there had always been some amount of control. Force was not something that Retsu appreciated, especially when it was unwarranted.
"Well," she finally spoke, if only to hear her own voice. Whether his words were true or not, it would be something that Retsu would work out on her own. Facts from random strangers were not something that she'd blindly accept. No, sitting idly by was not her way. A part of her hoped that he was wrong, but a part of her wondered too just what she would do if it all were true.
