I like the plate versus the pyramid because it's a way more practical way to look at things. They even make divided plates that people can use to make sure they follow those guidelines (especially for diabetics).
The myplate.gov (formerly mypyramid.gov) site is really useful too.

I like the plate! That's how my mom taught us to make sure we had balanced meals :D

I also like how this is much more inclusive than the pyramid,"proteins" is not as specific as "meat, fish, beans" etc. And the exclusion of sweets as a main food group is a good move, methinks.

I think in some ways it's a more representative image. But, with our current obesity crisis, I wish the plate change in the following ways:

1.) I don't like the idea of telling people to fill their plate to the brim. Portion size is important and I worry this is sending a bad message.

2.) I wish that within the categories, there was a way to add "good", "better", "best choices". Because I fear that the vegetable will be french fries, the grain will be white bread, and the protein will be fried. Perhaps the fruit will be high calorie and sugar fruit juice.

I think an opportunity was missed to add in more information about WHAT foods to pick, not just a category that people won't understand.

3.) Given research on water and fluid consumption being very low and most people running a bit dehydrated, I am also disappointed that water drinking guidelines are not part of the new Plate. We all know that people do not drink enough fluids and I think they could have been added in here.

I love the emphasis on fruits and vegetables. Recently, I made a switch in my diet to make sure that my plates were more vegetable-based than anything else, and I have seen and felt the difference! Besides, Americans can stand to eat more plants anyway.

I can't give any more detailed thoughts at the moment since I was only able to read the CNN article here at work (everything else is blocked, and my work computer doesn't have flash so I can't actually see the plate), but I do like the change! Will it solve anything by itself? Of course not. But I think it's a step in the right direction.

Well, it looks a lot less complicated at least!
