Mirror Mirror on the Wall: Chapter 2 - On John the Man

One of the basic tenants of Family Systems Theory is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, that the family cannot be fully appreciated by simply examining each of its individual members. Instead, in one sense, a family is its own living, breathing organism. It grows and changes, but is governed by rules over behavior and feedback ( Read more... )

Poor John...I never much liked his style until I saw "In the Beginning" . Obviously that episode worked for me. I was able to see him in a new light.

I do wonder what he knew and just what he thought Sam would do that would require saving or killing? What would John think of Sam's dalliances with Ruby? It certainly violates the "reject all things supernatural" core value, but then again...tech. Sam is supernatural too. And John never would have rejected him.

I'm not sure I made sense since I was doing a bit of the speculating.

I think Sam's dalliance with Ruby would scare the bejesus out of John. I have a feeling he'd make no bones about going behind Sam's back and killing her.

Sam is supernatural too. And John never would have rejected him.

You know, when you say it like that it strongly reminds me of the dynamics of growing up gay in a traditional/conservative household. Except there's no PFLAG group for hunter-parents when their children come out of the supernatural closet. :D

*ponders gay/conservative family dynamic more* Hmmmmmmmm..... growing up feeling off/different/unlovable?/wrong? Having to hide core parts of self from people you love? Sam and his secrets/hiding/running away to California (of all places) were he could "come out" XD.

Grrrrrrrrrrrl, you have got to stop doing this to me. *G*

What are you talkin' about? You've got me in the thinky place and I'm suppose to be doing my taxes! :P

I'd never really stopped to parallel Sam's struggle with his differences with being gay, but it makes so much sense. When Sam finally came out of the "Supernatural closet" [your expression...quite funny, and accurate] Dean was fully freaked out. Dean was okay with it (read: tolerated it) until he saw Sam be more overt with his behavior...and then there's Ruby worming her way into his brother's life! Then Dean sees Sam in action in 4.04 and he's really rejecting him (punches anyone?). My god, the parallels.

***I really need to step away from the computer, but I'm having fun with your ideas.

My god, the parallels.

*snork* And Dean's "*blick* TMI, Dude" reaction when Sam told him about having sex with Ruby.

And! And! Sam trying to make it into something good and his face when told that God doesn't like that stuff. And! And! It's okay to be supernatural as long as you don't act on those feelings. And! And! Lifestyle choices versus born that way!

You've got me in the thinky place and I'm suppose to be doing my taxes!

Taxes? TAXES! *checks calendar* Phew! Cool, 54 more days of procrastination left. Scared me there for a second. ;)

Hee. I'm having way too much fun with them, too. Mind if I expand on your ideas during my Sam-analysis? Proper credit given, of course.
