Character Information

General
Canon Source: Fullmetal Alchemist
Canon Format: Manga
Character's Name: Alphonse Elric (Goes by “Al” for short)
Character's Age: 14

What form will your character's NV take? It looks like an Alchemy book, except when you open it the book is much more high tech than anything from Alphonse’s world, with a screen, microphone, camera, etc.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Alphonse has the ability to alchemize anything, with the aid of an alchemy circle. Basically, Alchemy is the process of analyzing, deconstructing and reconstructing something. He uses his alchemy to aid him in combat, both offensively and defensively(creating columns and walls, for example), as well as out of combat (such as, using it to help with rebuilding).

Where he comes from in the series he still needs the help of an alchemy circle to alchemize anything, but I would like for him to eventually gain the ability to alchemize without the use of the circle, as he does later on in the manga. (If that would be alright)

Along with his alchemical skills, because he is a soul bound to a suit of armor, he has no need to sleep, eat, doesn’t feel pain, doesn’t exhaust stamina- basically Alphonse is exempt from the limitations of a human body, although he must keep his bloodseal protected at all times.

Weapons: Doesn’t carry anything on him, as he is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter, not to mention the fact that he has the ability to alchemize a weapon at will (although he usually sticks to hand-to-hand)

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Alphonse is the youngest son of Trisha and Hohenheim Elric, raised in a rural town called Risembool in the country of Amestris. When he was only a baby his father disappeared one night, never to return again.

In the following years, he and his older brother, Edward displayed a remarkable talent with Alchemy- teaching themselves the basics through their father’s books. When Alphonse was only 4, Trisha contracted a mysterious illness and died. Devastated by their mother’s death, the two boys made up their minds to find a way to bring their mother back using Alchemy.

In a search for greater alchemical knowledge, the two boys became the students of Izumi Curtis, where they learned the concept of “all is one, one is all” (basically that they are just a small part of the world, but the world cannot function without those small parts). Although their teacher warned them about the dangers of human transmutation, the boys were determined, and the night they returned home they began their preparations for bringing their mother back.

Gathering all of the ingredients and constructing a human transmutation circle in their home, they used their own blood as “equivalent exchange” for their mother’s soul. During the transmutation there was a rebound and Alphonse lost his entire body, while his older brother lost his left leg. Al’s soul drifted and attached itself to the creature the boys had made, but it was unable to sustain life, so it died, and Alphonse’s soul wandered again. When he finally woke up he found he was in the body of one of his father’s ornamental suits of armor, and that Edward had traded his right arm to bind Al’s soul to the armor though a bloodseal on the armor.

The boys stayed at their family friend’s house for a time, where they were visited by Roy Mustang, an officer in the Amestris military. After Edward went through surgery to have automail prosthetics to replace his missing limbs, the two left to join the state Military in the hopes that they would eventually find a way to get Alphonse’s body and Ed’s limbs back. While he performed just as well as Edward did on the exam to become a State Alchemist, Alphonse was forced to drop out because a required physical exam would have given away his lack of a human body.

Three years later, the boys are still searching for answers, specifically looking for the fabled Philosopher’s stone. Throughout their journey they experience some horrible things, such as the State Alchemist Shou Tucker using his own daughter in an alchemical experiment, and their own near-deaths at the hands of the alchemist killer known only as Scar. While researching about the Philosopher’s stone they discover that the main ingredient used to create it is live human beings. Momentarily disheartened by this, they decide to look into Laboratory 5 to see if they can find “The Truth behind all Truths”, as hinted at in the notes they got from the alchemist named Marcoh.

Point in Canon: Alphonse is coming in from his and Edward’s attempt to sneak into Laboratory 5. Because of his size Alphonse had been forced to wait outside for his brother, and it is at this point that he gets transported to Siren’s Port.

Character Personality: In stark contrast to the abrasive personality of his older brother Edward, Alphonse is calm and passive. Despite being the younger brother he is more often than not the level-headed one of the pair and has a remarkable amount of maturity. He is kind and generous almost to a fault, with both friends and enemies. Alphonse will almost always try to come up with a solution to avoid killing at any cost.

Despite seeming like the meeker of the duo, Alphonse can be just as passionate as his older brother although “he has remarked that his anger takes longer to spark and jokes that he is always beaten to the punch by Edward's outbursts.” Even then, Alphonse tirelessly, and selflessly fights for what he believes is right even in the face of the greatest adversity.

Even though outwardly Alphonse usually composes himself in a cheerful manner, there are many inner demons he must deal with. While others might see a body that doesn’t succumb to the weaknesses of a human body as a blessing, Alphonse dreads the long, lonesome nights where he is tormented by unpleasant thoughts and feelings of guilt. He also longs for human warmth and suffers silently as he forgets normal human sensations, like the scent of his loved ones and the taste of his favorite foods.

Alphonse also carries many burdens from his past. He blames himself greatly for the loss of his brother’s limbs, and refuses to consider restoring his own body if Ed doesn’t get his arm and leg back as well. On top of that, as is reveled later in the series, Alphonse also blames himself for the failure of the human transmutation, and the apparent second death of his mother (although the boys later find out that the creature they brought back wasn’t their mother at all).

On a more superficial level, Alphonse dislikes his large stature, complaining that it wasn’t his choice to be so big. Because of this, he is very pleased when others treat him like a child. He also has a great fondness for cats and is often seen trying to smuggle them inside of his armor, especially during rainy days.

Character Plans: Alphonse isn’t going to be satisfied being stuck inside of Siren’s Port, especially if Edward is not there with him, and will work to try and find a way out so he can be reunited with his brother and continue their journey.

Um…

[Alphonse didn’t bother with the video- it’s not as if his expression would ever change anyway. And he liked his voice, it was one of the few things about himself that was still human.]

[He was sitting on the floor of his apartment. The sirens had gone off not that long ago and Alphonse found himself waiting. Waiting until the sun came back up. It wasn’t much different from his life before he came here, really. Except now everyone else was similarly trapped during the night, and although most of the time the others used that time to sleep, there were always a few restless ones who spent the first few hours of the night conversing on the NV until they too succumbed to sleep. Until then, Alphonse wasn’t truly alone.]

How were your days today?

Third Person Sample

A lone, although formidable figure walked through the alleyways of Siren’s Port. A powerful thunderhead was quickly overtaking the sky and although it was still only late-afternoon, it was already getting dark. Alphonse had been in the city for a little over a week now, but the sheer size of it never ceased to amaze the young boy. Central, his home country’s capital, was just a tiny suburb compared to Siren’s Port.

Over the last few days, after getting settled in his new apartment, Alphonse took to spending his time exploring his new home. He wanted to have a good, solid understanding of his surroundings, and he was able to make decent progress every day, since he never had to stop for rest or food. So far his favorite place was to the north, the grassy farmlands. It was such a stark, and welcome change from the rest of the bustling city. Coming from a small farming town himself, Alphonse felt at least a little more at home there and could see himself visiting there many times in the future.

Right now, though, Alphonse was longing for those wide, open fields. He had been searching in a roughly radial pattern, with his apartment as the center point, and today his explorations brought him to the east. According to the map he had found, this was sector 9. Looking around Alphonse immediately felt bad for ever thinking the apartment he was given was run down. Compared to these living conditions, Alphonse’s apartment was practically the Fuhrer’s mansion. The buildings were all so run down that the roads and alleys started running into each other, making it hard to tell where one road started and the other ended, causing a reasonable amount of frustration for Alphonse.

“Now, it was a right here… right?” He asked to no one in particular as he paused at an unmarked streetcorner. It was strange, traveling without his older brother Edward. Before now, the two had been practically attached at the hip during their travels and Alphonse found himself missing the dialogue they would have as they tried to figure out what way to go next. If Ed was there, he probably wouldn’t have even thought to bring along a map.

“No, this is back where I started!” Alphonse gave an exasperated huff as he spotted a small abandoned storefront- one he had already passed several times before. Too much time had already been wasted trying to find his way back, and the sky continued to turn an ominous dark shade. If he didn’t figure out where he was soon, he’d be stuck out during the Darkness. He’d never actually seen the monsters of the Darkness yet, but he heard noises during the night, and the thought of being stuck alone and outside like this set his mind on edge.

High in the sky above Alphonse, a peal of thunder heralded the start of a rainstorm. He couldn’t feel the rain, but he could hear the sound of it plinking off of his armor. Holding out his hand he watched the drops slide off his fingers. He imagined it was a cold rain.

“No fair, rain.” Just then, another noise attracted Alphonse’s attention. It was a soft mewling. His concerns with the quickly approaching Darkness forgotten, Alphonse followed the sounds until he found its source- a stray cat hunkered near the decrepit walls of the store.

“Hey, what are you doing out here little guy?” Alphonse’s voice was light and gentle, contrasting with his huge hulking form that towered over the feline. Crouching down, he tried to make himself look as nonthreatening as a giant suit of armor with spikes could look. “Don’t you know it’s going to be dangerous to be out here soon?”

He could already hear Edward berating him for trying to take in any stray he saw, but he couldn’t just leave the cat out here in the rain, especially with the Darkness swiftly approaching. As he reached out one of his armored hards towards the cat, it backed away from him, arching its back and hissing before turning and darting around the corner and into the shop.

“H-hey! Wait!” Alphonse jumped up, chasing the cat. As he entered the shop, he caught sight of the cat disappearing under the broken down counter, “I just want to help you!” He crouched down on the floor, peering under the counter when he saw something unexpected.

It was an entire litter of kittens. The mother, who Alphonse had been chasing, was hunkered down in front of her children, a low growl emitting from her tiny form as Alphonse came into view. The babies behind her, still blind, were crawling around their mother’s legs, mewling.

“Oh.” Alphonse said with a mix of wonder and sadness in his voice. It was always amazing to him to see a mother with her children, and a little bittersweet, calling to mind memories of his own mother.

Sitting back on his haunches he sighed, “I guess you have someone you have to protect too, huh?” But still he hesitated. Would the family of cats be alright there on their own once the monsters came out?

He didn’t have much time to wonder, because before long the familiar, yet still terrifying sound of the sirens started. Alphonse jumped to his feet. He still didn’t know where he was exactly,  but he could guess that he was at least a good hour's walking distance away from his apartment. And there was still the matter of the cats to worry about.

He could practically hear Edward yelling at him for being so reckless, but Alphonse had made his decision. Using the stick of chalk he kept with him to draw transmutation circles, he managed to seal up the windows and the doors. He wasn’t exactly sure what made something “darkproof” but he hoped that it would at least keep the beasts out for one night.

Sitting back down on the floor near the counter, in the darkness of the run down store, Alphonse rested his hands in his lap, prepared for a long wait ahead of him.
