[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Natalie V. Adams aka Envy Adams
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Fandom: Scott Pilgrim [comicverse]
Timeline: After her concert in Vol. 6
History: Here!

Character Personality: At first glance, Envy is your everyday rockstar Diva- posh and condescending, dismissive of people she thinks aren’t worth her time and just overall not a very nice person.

She didn’t used to be that way, of course- Envy used to be a relatively nice, if slightly sarcastic, kind of nerdy girl in her early college days. The kind of girl whose room you hung out and talked about anime in- the kind of girl who wore sweatshirts and kept her hair in a ponytail- simple, sweet, nice. The changes happened slowly but surely as she- then Natalie, soon Nat V. and shortly Envy- became more and more engrossed in making the band she’d joined with Scott into something other than just a side-project to waste her time on. Her ambition changed her- she went from a girl who had a roomful of figurines and memorabilia to a girl who’d sold all of it off and used the money to buy expensive, fashionable things. She let nothing get in the way of her newfound drive for fame, not even the emotions of her fellow founders/bandmates, her self-serving nature leading her to having their decisions vetoed and taking control of the band from them almost by force, well-hidden by votes and ‘diplomacy’.

Her shifting personality clashed with Scott’s view of her, and resistant to change as he is, it led to more than one fight, and eventually after Envy got their band onto the radar of a few music producers, to their eventual breakup after a drunken (on Scott’s part at least) fight. Scott was supposed to be the heart-breaking wannabe lady’s man- and Envy is the one who wound up (as it’s put by others) kicking his heart in the ass. What Scott (unlike nearly everyone else) fails to understand is that Envy didn’t just suddenly become a bad person- as she slowly began thinking of becoming famous, she slowly began behaving in the manner someone who expects fame would. She cheated on him, not even bothering with trying to hide the fact, and when he wrote her a song, she failed to see how it might (or should) have mattered to her. Her selfishness is actually kind of world-class, and she takes the slightest disagreement with her as a slight, whether she’s actually in the wrong or not.

When Envy reappears in Toronto, it’s to facilitate her then-boyfriend’s attempt to defeat Scott as his membership in the League of Evil Exes requires. She sets the stage for manipulative competitions between the two of them, always trying to call the shots despite the fact that she’s not actually directly involved in the conflict- but to not be involved in hurting someone she believes hurt her isn’t something Envy is willing to do. Also, despite her boyfriend’s own failings, she’s just as blind to them as Scott used to be to hers, seemingly oblivious to the signs that he’s cheating on her despite the fact that he doesn’t even really try too hard to hide them- Envy is good at lying to herself when she needs or wants to, though when she does realize she’s being wronged, her temperament is violently explosive. She’s not a girl to be trifled with- her Diva attitude combining with her natural temperament to make her somewhat volatile. Despite all this, however, Envy is still not earnestly a bad person- simply someone who can hold a grudge and makes bad decisions under their influence. She’s quick to forgive Scott despite his essentially headbutting her boyfriend into oblivion, and she’s actually capable of holding a decent, civil conversation with him afterward (she tried to do so before but well- Scott…) She does often seem to try and take the high-road after her disagreements with people if she winds up being in the wrong (even if only partially) and seems to actually try and mediate conflicts between people rather than egg them on if she can- though it seems that it’s also a bit self-serving as the only instance of this is between Scott and Gideon, the latter of whom it later turns out she is both dating and having her solo career managed by.

Envy’s nature and constant desire for more and better things, however, seem to lead her to making more and more bad decisions. The first was Todd who, despite the fact that she hadn’t seen him in years, she cheated on Scott with and then wound up being cheated on by. Likewise, her drive to continue being a musician despite the loss of her band makes her seek out the assistance of Gideon Graves- who she also winds up dating. Strangely, it’s the kind of relationship where most of the effort seems to be put in by Envy herself, and eventually ends up being somewhat resentful and strained, despite her best efforts to the contrary. She doesn’t seem to mind relinquishing control of herself to him, but hates what he does with it- and yet continues to put up with it because of what he can do for her and her career. It’s a bit self-destructive in a way, but she allows it because she realizes what she stands to gain is, in her opinion, greater than what she stands to lose.

She does have her limits, however, and when Gideon shows that his desire to get Ramona back is more important than their relationship, she’s more than content to stand back and let Scott and Ramona kick his ass. No one, after all, fucks with Envy Adams and gets away with it. It’s just not a Thing you Do.

Character Abilities: Envy is, despite her likely inclination to believe otherwise, a fairly average girl in terms of abilities. She’s an excellent singer and songwriter, she has the capacity to be extremely personable and charming, and she is very much driven when it comes to getting what she wants, when she wants it. She’s also- unsurprisingly, considering her canon- a rather impressive fighter as well as quite resilient, shown to be able to hold her own against Ramona unarmed while the other girl is possessed of her rather large sledgehammer. She’s also capable of using emotional distress she comes under to fuel either her anger or her drive to move forward, though it isn’t always guaranteed that she’ll manage to do so.

Character Weaknesses: Despite her apparent martial prowess, Envy is still pretty much just an average human being. She’s only slightly stronger and faster than normal, and anything that is likely to kill an average person would do the same to her. Because of her current lifestyle and profession, she’s also a bit of a Diva, making her prone to angry fits when she doesn’t get her way- not always but… a lot of the time. Envy is also very prone to violence when she loses her temper, picking fights indiscriminately when someone angers her (despite knowing that they are stronger/more powerful than her, i.e. Todd) and can hold grudges for quite a long time. She’s very much prone to showing her emotions, as she’s never really shown to hide how she feels about a situation unless she’s managing to hide how she feels about something from herself. Also, when she doesn’t manage to turn anything that hurts her into anger, she can and does fall into a quiet, depressive state until she can build herself back up again.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?
- Musical ability
- Slightly above-average strength and resilience
- Martial arts/combat ability
- Drive/ambition

What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?

Gain

- Insecurity- it won’t last long, but being in a world where no one’s even heard of her will be a blow that throws her off her game for a little bit

Lose

- Again, temporarily, but she will lose some of that volatility until she realizes just how capable/incapable she is of picking fights here.
- I’m working on assumptions here but- I would hazard a certain degree of her natural ‘human’ weakness would be lost, as she’s becoming a weapon, so she’d be at least a little more durable.

Keeping the game’s premise in mind, please give us a brief explanation of your plans for your character in Soul Campaign.

I’d actually like to see her learn to get over some of her more self-serving habits and learn to do things/cooperate with others for the sake of the greater good. Envy’s not a terrible person, but she is unbelieeeeevably selfish, and I’d like to actually see her grow out of that a little bit as a character.

[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Weapon: Envy can fight, and when necessary, she can and will fight her own battles. However, she’s also got a bad habit of setting herself up to be used, whether she realizes it or not. When she does let herself be used, however, she’s usually only willing to do so on her terms- but she gives her all to the situation at hand. However, as far as fighting and combat goes, she’s really not the type to do so unless she’s got something personal at stake- but she is willing to facilitate someone else’s battles and their ability to do so if it’s in her favor- and considering that going home would definitely be in her favor, I can see her allowing herself to be used for the task at hand, but hey- if there are already tons of people trying to do something about it, as a meister she would not be likely to try and contribute to the effort herself.

What is your character's Weapon form?: Envy will take the form of a sort of a microphone that ‘extends’ into a katana. The reasons for this form in particular are actually pretty simple- canonically, Envy’s two most ‘influential’ boyfriends have been katana-users, while Envy herself appears to not be a fighter at all- thus the sword hidden in something completely unobtrusive but still representative of Envy herself as a person: a microphone. The most unusual part of her weapon form will likely be the blade of the sword she becomes as it will be made of diamond- i.e. ice- both in reference to Envy’s implied ‘Ice Queen’ persona and the final words she says- or rather, sings- in the comic (“It’s over and I’m gone, North where I belong- cold the way my heart has been all along”).

Abilities:

- Dissonance: When she doesn’t resonate well with the person she’s being wielded by (50% or lower), the microphone at the end of Envy’s handle will vibrate- producing a sound that may disorient the enemy her meister is focused on but also making slightly more difficult to keep a good grip on.
- Harmony: When she resonates exceptionally well with the person she’s being wielded by (75% or higher), the microphone at the end of Envy’s handle will emit a melody that raises their resonance even higher as well as lulls the enemy her meister is focused on into a stupor.
- Cold Shoulder: When she doesn’t resonate well with the person she’s being wielded by (50% or lower), contact with Envy’s blade has a 30-50% chance of freezing whatever it touches and a 25-40% chance of encasing her wielder’s hands in a block of ice, lasting anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.
- Great White North: When she resonates exceptionally well with the person she’s being wielded by (75% or higher), contact with Envy’s blade has a 70-85% chance of either freezing whatever it touches for anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes or sending out a wave of razor-sharp ice.

[ SAMPLES ]

First Person: So hello… Death City, was it?

[Envy’s voice is low and condescending, the slight lilt she has in her tone attempting to make her words less acerbic- and while it softens the edge, it can’t hide it. Not at all.]

You know, you would think with a name like that, it’d be at least a little more impressive. And yet here I am. Utterly. Unimpressed.

[She crosses her arms, one perfectly-manicured hand rising to flip her hair over her shoulder, and then favors the network at large with a wry, unamused smile- more like a show of all those neat, white teeth than anything.]

On top of that, they’re expecting me to fight some ridiculous war they’ve got going here? -if that’s even a legitimate thing, I mean. But that’s not even the worst part. The worst part is I can’t even find so much as a single. Designer. Outlet.

[What a travesty, seriously, :(]

If I’m going to wind up having to fight, I’m going to do it in style or not at all, so someone needs to direct me to the nearest place where I can get my hands on some Alexander McQueen, or we are going to have some problems.

Third Person: The last strains of the music faded along with the lights, and Envy closed her eyes, reveling in the brief moment before that and the applause of the audience-

But it never came, the silence stretching on far too long along with the darkness of the house lights. Envy’s eyes snapped open and she was overwhelmed by vertigo as she realized she’d gone from standing to laying, her microphone beside her on top of… something. Whatever it was, it wasn’t very comfortable, and she pushed herself into a sitting position, ready to start bitching at the nearest shitty stagehand about the situation at hand. She squinted, not able to see much for a few moments until her eyes adjusted to the dimness, and opened her mouth, taking a breath to start yelling, screaming, bitching only to stop as screens flickered to life out of nowhere. There was a brief second of panic (because this whole setup suddenly screamed ‘Gideon’ a little too loudly for her liking) but she relaxed slightly as she saw that it wasn’t his face on the screen. Not his face at all.

No, instead it was some guy she’d never seen asking her to stay calm (as if that didn’t incite an immediate urge to flip right the fuck out) as he began to explain where she was.

At first, of course, she was skeptical- and in fact, she was skeptical up until she left the chamber to join the mass of other arrivals, some of whom only served to reinforce the fact that she definitely wasn’t in Toronto anymore, Toto. She went from disbelieving at the situation to disbelieving at the amount of detail this guy had gone into for this little farce of his- after all, if this wasn’t a kidnapping (albeit a rather atypical one) she didn’t know what was. But he was giving her free reign, so to speak, for the moment- and if she had her way, she’d find her way out of here in no time at all. After all- this guy might have been able to somehow KO her and sneak her out in the darkness of the Chaos Theater, but in a fair fight, she could probably make him beg for mercy.

Mercy that she’d leave to the courts after she beat him to her liking, most likely.

For now, though, there was someone else coming to escort her, apparently- and hand on her microphone, Envy weighed it carefully, feeling out how well it’d act as a weapon. Granted, she was still in her stage clothes but really- she’d fought in her stage clothes before, and it wasn’t as if she’d paid for this dress- Gideon had, so she wasn’t exactly afraid to get it a little messy. So she slid to her feet, watching as a door she hadn’t been able to see in the darkness opened, and prepared to use her mic as a makeshift weapon.

Really, these guys were kind of seriously shitty at this whole kidnapping gig.

[ NOTES ]
Bluuuuuh I really hope I did this right, idk how do I magical weapon forms?! Also I have some sketches for Envy’s weapon form if you guys would like to see those. Hopefully they are not too ridiculous, orz.
