so for the third year in a row the booker prize goes to a book that is excellent literature but not necessarily great entertainment. books that will be far more admired than they will be enjoyed. for a while, at the booker's commercial peak, from 1997 to 2003, the winners were all mega bestsellers. and pretty darn good books too

Hi, I really liked the one book by Anne Enright that I've read ( I thought it was more a best seller) and would like to read 'The Gathering' - have you read it? I thought Banville's 'The Sea' was a piece of great writing and I'm still reading Kiran Desai's novel. I guess winning the prize increases sales and makes the writer accessible as bookstores stock the books then. Also, irish and indian writers and quite in vogue again. Only time can tell good literature from great literature - its a tough one!
ps: He didn't know Ray Charles?! Satyajit Ray would have been turning in his grave!:)
