A New Companion (OTA)

Ever since the 'days of anger', as Martin has come to think of them, he has been withdrawn. A Do Not Disturb sign has been on his door non-stop and he's been out as little as possible. His bruises and split lip from his encounter with Khan have healed, the emotional wound of being left by the pet that had picked him in the first place, however, ( Read more... )

I was at the shelter-slash-vet's to get Mr. Magoo a haircut. With the warming weather, the big guy got overheated real quick, so there we were. I grinned and waved when I saw Martin.

He, after all, wasn't the one who had been with me the night I'd gone all shambly on. Yeah, I'd been hiding out since then, too. Even to the point of calling in sick for all my accumulated sick time...

Martin gives a small wave in return, wondering if Angel can know about his appalling behaviour he's still ashamed of. Hopefully she doesn't. She seems happy enough to see him.

And there's her huge dog. Friendly but easily able to overpower Martin, as he remembers. He tries to keep a safe distance from the dog while not being too obvious about it.

"I'll be right over there, boy," I informed the dog as I stepped away towards Martin. The St. Bernard tried giving Martin a warning look, 'Run away before she ties you down and cuts your hair too!' sort of thing.

I decided to take any wind out of Martin's 'are you practicing reading?' sails at the start. "I've been trying to read faster the past few weeks."

I had, too. Too much TV any more and my brain went numb, so I'd watch some and then read some.

It just never went any easier or faster.

Martin blinks at the unexpected opening to the conversation (which couldn't be further from his line of thoughts), apparently hellos are a thing of the past. Or are just being waved now.

"Uhm, oh, that - that's good. What have you been reading?" He eyes the dog, noticing it's staring, but is unable to interpret it. "Is he OK?"
