Summary: Future!fic. On the eve of their fifth anniversary together, Blaine asks Kurt a very important question about the future.

When Kurt suggested they meet in San Diego for Spring Break, which conveniently overlapped their five year anniversary, Blaine knew he had to plan something special. He also decided that it was time to ask Kurt a question that’d been on his mind for a very long time. It would be the biggest decision that either of them had made in their lives, but Blaine was confident Kurt would say, ‘yes’

After all, they were stronger than ever, even after nearly four years of long distance at different colleges. It had been difficult to consider separation, but they both wanted what was best for each other and that had meant schools across the country. They hadn’t been the easiest years, but strangely, they were also the happiest both had ever been; Skype and holidays and the occasional surprise flight to see Kurt had kept them going all this time.

“Ready?” Blaine asked, moving Kurt by the shoulders to exactly the spot he wanted. He was determined to make this the perfect moment.

“Whenever you are,” Kurt exhaled.

Blaine removed the blindfold, revealing the spread he’d laid out for them: a blanket laid out on the beach, a few brightly glowing candles buried halfway in the sand for romantic effect in the dwindling twilight, and a slice of strawberry pie - their favorite dessert - accompanied by a bottle of champagne. He’d been scoping out a place that would be quiet enough all week. Thankfully they were alone with just the gentle lap of the waves accompanying them.

“Happy anniversary,” he whispered in Kurt’s ear before nuzzling against the crook of his neck and wrapping his arms around him from behind. The gasp that Blaine could hear and feel from Kurt was reward enough for his effort.

“It’s beautiful - you are-” he exclaimed but trailed off, whirling around to face him. Kurt cupped Blaine’s face in his hands and kissed him forcefully. “What did I do to deserve you?” Kurt shook his head in disbelief.

“You were you,” he replied sincerely. “Come on.” He tugged on Kurt’s hand and they sat down on the blanket. Silently, he poured two glasses of champagne. He enjoyed the feeling of Kurt’s eyes on him, just as he had the first day they met. “Pie?” He offered, handing Kurt a fork and picking up the plate to hold between them.

Kurt took a swipe of whipped cream off the top, coating his index finger before sucking it clean. He wasn’t even trying, but he was already getting Blaine worked up. He didn’t know how it was possible after all this time, but he found Kurt sexier every single day. He wanted nothing more than to lay them down here on the beach and make love, but he had a serious question that needed to be asked. He wouldn’t allow himself to get (too) distracted.

When he swiped his finger again, Blaine caught it and brought it to his own mouth this time. Kurt gave a satisfied smile before lurching forward to kiss him again. After a few seconds, Blaine pulled back and forked a bite of pie, offering it to Kurt. Chewing would keep his mouth busy enough to allow Blaine to say what he wanted.

“Listen, I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s going to happen after graduation, Kurt. I know you’ve talked about moving to New York City.” Kurt nodded in agreement, still chewing. “And I probably shouldn’t assume that I’m still part of the picture after graduation.”

Kurt pulled a face and quickly swallowed. “Of course you are. You have been all this time. Why would it suddenly change now?”

“Because it’ll be the real world now, not college, and we’ll have to deal with real problems. And I wouldn’t blame you for wanting to be with someone in New York, Kurt. But, I don’t want to lose you.” Blaine absolutely couldn’t bear the thought.

“Stop talking like that,” Kurt demanded, reaching to touch Blaine’s face with his fingertips.

“I want to go with you, Kurt. We can get an apartment together and make a go of it in the business. I don’t want to be apart anymore.” He paused to watch the realization sweep over Kurt’s face. “What do you say?”

“It’s a risky life. Are you sure you wouldn’t be happier here in LA? As talented as we are, we both know neither business is easy to get into. Yes, I want you with me, but I don’t want to be the reason you don’t get to follow your heart. That’s why we went to different schools.”

“Being with you is following my heart,” he answered without a thought. He took a bite of pie and a sip of champagne. Kurt said nothing. “It doesn’t matter what happens, as long as we’re together. I mean that. If we end up living in a cardboard box or we become super famous, nothing between us changes. You mean everything to me, Kurt.”

“You aren’t proposing, are you?” His tone was a mixture of fear and excitement.

Blaine laughed, setting down the pie and scooting closer to him, their crossed legs touching. “Not officially, but since you brought it up.”

Making potentially lifetime commitments to each other was not what normal college seniors did on Spring Break, but then again, they’d always bucked social convention.

“We’re young, Blaine.”

“I know, Kurt.” He interrupted. “But ---”

“--- but I know you’re it.” Kurt finished his thought for him.

Several bashful seconds passed between them, where their faces both burned red and their hearts swelled. Five years ago, neither had expected to be sitting here talking about forever. Hell, neither of them really even thought they’d find someone who truly accepted them as they were.

“To us,” Kurt proposed, holding his glass aloft.

Blaine smiled, clinking his glass to Kurt’s. “To us,” he echoed.

Blaine pulled out the stereo he had cleverly hidden behind the basket that held the champagne and more pie, should they find themselves in the mood, and pressed play. He stood, kicked off his shoes and offered Kurt his hand. He had never been as good a dancer as Kurt, but slow dancing was fine - and he wanted to be close to Kurt right now. And always.

He pressed Kurt tight to his body and they swayed to the music.

“We’re going to hyphenate, right?” Kurt asked breaking the silence. “Anderson is such a boring last name by itself.”

“Hey!” Blaine pretended to be hurt. An apologetic peck from Kurt soon followed. “Are we really doing this? I mean an actual wedding? It’s not even legal yet in New York.”

“So, we’ll go somewhere where it is. You’re not gonna deprive me of planning our actual wedding, are you?”

“I’d never do that.” He chuckled, tightening his grip on Kurt’s waist. If there was one thing Kurt enjoyed it was a good wedding, and especially one that he got to plan. Burt and Carole were more in love than ever, so perhaps Kurt’s wedding planning was good luck. Not that they’d need it.

“Hummel-Anderson or Anderson-Hummel?” Kurt asked, wrapping his arms around Blaine’s neck.

“Who says I want your last name? Maybe I’ll stick with my boring old last name.”

“Anderson-Hummel, I think,” Kurt continued, simply ignoring him. “Plus it’s alphabetical, so it’s fair.”

“Whatever you say,” Blaine replied, stopping Kurt’s rambling with his lips. Kurt’s hands moved teasingly to the front of his jeans, slowly dragging the zipper down.

“Five years,” Kurt breathed against his lips. “And hopefully many more.” He took Blaine’s hand and brought them back to the blanket. “Let’s celebrate.”
