Weekend Update

May 31, 2005 15:33

I had a full and very tiring weekend filled to the brim with manly and masculine activities including shooting, cutting steel, and lots of welding.

I'll put it behind a cut to save some of you from being overwhelmed with machismo )

I went shooting this weekend too, (I find patriotic holidays appropriate for that sort of thing) though my range sucks much ass compared to yours.

I combined it with a blind date of sorts, and decided that shooting is the perfect place for just such an activity. You each turn in your DLs, so there's some precaution taken in case the guy is a psycho. And if you out-shoot him, and he doesn't call you back, you know it would never have worked out anyway.... Plus, I got to shoot, instead of sharing a burger and small talk.

Before taking the pistol out, I biked by the long gun club here in My Liberal City. It's in a beautiful location and they have a swell set up. I'm hoping to try it out.

I have to miss Field Day (and my class reunion) for work. Grr. Argh. Maybe by next year I'll actually know something, instead of just having a HT and 7 characters of CW.

Hah! That's the funniest thing I've seen all day. Seriously, there's a certain elegance in meeting a blind-date at the range.

There's a long gun club in Your Liberal City? Where?

And I'm no Annie Oakley, but at least I didn't keep the targets at the 7 yard line the whole time. Sheesh.

I did check my reaction times with a timer set on random and holding the gun at ready on the target. From the buzzer to the first shot was around .25s on average. This is something that I'm going to need to work on.

Back-to-back-to-back on this sort of thing netted me almost identical .26s. Very consistent, but not as fast as I would like....

I'll let you know if I figure out some magical trick to improve reaction times. Mine were pretty consistent as well, and I couldn't improve them regardless of how much I tried.

There's a physiological barrier in there somewhere. I don't recall anybody among a group of peers being any faster than .20. I figure there are more gains to be made, speed wise, in draw, reload, splits, etc. Even if I manage to become _amazing_, I doubt I'd pick up more than .06, you know?
