I know, I know...I don't ever update. I don't know why. I check LJ at least once a day...I just never feel up to writing.

Anyway, I'm currently in somewhat of a wonderful delimma. ( Before I explain it, I'm going to give a little background info for those who haven't been in close proximity to me for the last few weeks and therefore haven't heard me bitch about it. )

I LOVED teaching elementary music. It's totally awesome to not see the same kids every day. And they LOVED me. :-D

But I could see the advantages of those HS deals too. I really hope this all works out for ya!

Excellent lists of pros and cons. Now, weight those. Which is more important to you, the paycheck, or the budget? The classroom or the relationship with other art teachers? (or not) Not that you can really compare those things. But try and maybe that'll help you determine what you're really needing to change and what you're okay with. Or something. :) You'll figure it out. Yay for change! I say maybe go with the elementary school? Try something new? If you get into a HS you might not want to leave just to "try out" an elem school. But if you've got the chance now, and you've already taught HS in the past, give elementary school a try?

I thought the teacher raises were statewide? Or am I making that up?

From what you've said, though, I'd go with HS#1. It sounds like fun to me.

yeah...statewide raises went into effect last year. That was just the minimum salary required by the state. (and it was pretty much negated by the changes in emplyee-paid healthcare premiums.) Most districts pay above state minimum, and this was a round-rock specific raise of the amount they pay above state minimum.

Does that make sense?

I understand what you said. But Round Rock paying that much better than AISD, no, I wouldn't say that makes sense.

Much of the teacher's salary is determined by how much the school district can raise through taxes. Austin has a MANY more low income residents, and more areas of low property values (compared to RR, that is). AISD may also be increasing teacher salaries next year...I don't know because the salary schedules aren't posted yet.

Their salaries are one of the reasons they're losing teachers, and why competition to get jobs in other districts is so much tougher.

None of the schools I'm considering are in AISD, however. The HS's are in Pflugerville and Leander/Cedar Park.

You know, I bet if I'd had an art teacher like you in high school, I wouldn't have done as well as I did as a middle finger to the horrible people I clashed with, but would have done better because I'd have genuinely cared about succeeding.
