Where does our care for other people stem from?

People care about some of the weirdest things. why?

What produces our concern for others? This concern we have for people we don't even know, why is it there? Why do we care? Don't get me wrong, I'm not in favor of "everyone out for themselves," because, frankly, that would be pathetic. But an example of this I thought of is, America's obesity.
