I believe it is supposed to be random and stupid. Based on the Jay Leno show, I think there are people who wouldn't know that it wasn't New Hampshire.

my summation of it is that nobody knows where new hampshire is, and if you just put any old state there it wouldnt matter. honestly, there are so many people out there that think new hampshire is a city in mass. there are people out there that think new england is a state. im not sure why they chose california, but i will say that its because no one knows where new hampshire is, or what it looks like haha. but then again, i AM typing this while listening to the song fly to the angels by slaughter, which proves im an idiot.

Yeah... I didn't get it either. I think any explanation for it is lame.
