On Frank’s birthday Gerard gave him a candle. He told Frank to keep it safe and to light it whenever he felt he needed his wish most. Frank smiled, dopey and grateful, and pocketed the small pink and blue wax.
At Thanksgiving dinner Gerard asked Frank if he’s used his wish yet, Frank shook his head, too ashamed to admit he’d forgotten all about it. Gerard leant in close and whispered softly to Frank, told him to use it wisely. Frank closed his eyes as Gerard’s warm and scented breath ran over his ear, leaning closer towards the feeling. And then just like that, Gerard was gone. Frank opened his eyes and blinked. He didn’t look at Gerard for the rest of that day.
When Christmas rolled around Frank had too much to drink, as he usually did whenever there was a good enough excuse. He was a beer or two away from slurred speech, but for now he didn’t need many words as he caught Gerard by the arm and dragged him close. Gerard smiled and laughed, accusing Frank of being drunk. Frank waved it off and called Gerard closer with a crook of his finger. As he did Frank whispered he knew what his wish would be and then looked up. Gerard followed Frank’s eyes to the mistletoe hung above them laced with festive ribbon. Gerard smiled sheepishly and shook his head, telling Frank once again that he was drunk. Frank didn’t care; he grabbed the back of Gerard’s neck and pulled him in for a sweet and innocent kiss. Gerard pulled back and walked away, leaving Frank puzzled and hurt beneath the mistletoe.
On the night the earth stood still, when the moon invaded the sun, sending the world in to darkness, Frank went to high ground to watch. He told himself he wanted a better view, he wanted to marvel at the beauty of nature and think about life, but he knew, deep down, he went because he knew all too well who else would be there. Sure enough, he was. He turned when he heard someone approach, and looked almost unsurprised to see Frank stood there. He walked to Gerard’s side and nodded a silent hello, which Gerard returned. As the grass beneath their feet darkened and the ring of light slowly appeared, Frank had just one question. Why not? Gerard turned to him, looking hurt, and simply said it was because he was broken, because he had been for a long time and he didn’t want Frank to be the one who had to fix him, didn’t want Frank to break trying. He left when the light reappeared, though Frank had never felt more in the dark.
Gerard spent New Years alone, much like every other holiday. He sat in front of the TV, scorning at the people having a much better time in order to try and cover the almost suffocating feeling of wanting to drink his troubles away. And really, who would care if he did? He got up to turn the TV off, he couldn’t bare to watch the countdown of another year alone. The dark and dismal world which lay beneath his blankets and pillows was waiting for him. A knock at his door stopped him. He stared at it, puzzled. Slowly he shuffled towards it, pushing his hands against it and peering through the peephole. He pulled it open with a small gasp. Frank stood behind it, lit candle in hand. He stepped inside the apartment and passed the candle to Gerard, who held it with clumsy fingers. He blew out the candle and pulled Gerard in for a long and loving kiss. Outside the fireworks banged and Frank hoped that this year, his wish would come true.
