If you can boot it without extensions it is almost always some sort of software (not hardware) issue.

Try booting off of the Mac OS disk and see if that works. If so, I'd reintall the Mac OS clean before assuming a hardware problem.

the only problem is that the guy already had OS loaded and didn't supply the re-install disk lol.. the joy of getting something for free I guess.

Well I went to the website you gave me and I did the single mode and the scan of the hard drive - It came back ok. I then told it to reboot and it did but then it brought it up into Normal Mode without asking for password and then froze.

Are you on IM right now? LOL.

I wish I could help, but I'm just starting to learn about these things myself..... just picked up a nice G3-500 for 22 bucks on eBay.
