What's a lace chart?

It's a kind of pattern for lace knitting...symbols in a chart instead of written instructions. Doing it for the tats would be insane, but I REALLY want to do it, sigh. I have clearly lost what little bit of mind I had left.

Although, I actually had a better idea than lace when I was driving home today, I just need to see if it's workable.
