I have never done this, that is critique the opinions of another person, but here goes. Wow! I almost felt, rather, could see what you were talking about. I can hardly recall anything written that could make me feel like a participant. Anyway, as usual, your writing is compelling; it makes me want to strive to be a better writer. I don't think it will ever sound as personal as yours, but I can try, right?
